For those who collect cassettes

Postby iefje » Fri Mar 15, 2019 10:43 am

Just came across an auction of this cassette single by Hank Marvin and Mark Knopfler: https://www.ebay.nl/itm/HANK-MARVIN-FEATURNG-MARK-KNOPFLER-WONDERFUL-LAND-1993-UK-CASSINGLE-JEFF-LYNNE/143167549502?hash=item215573703e:g:oAsAAOSwr0ZXOMti I remember buying this cassette single in early 1994 for around 15 to 20 Guilders.

This 7" / CD / cassette single is - up to now - the only source of the Hank Marvin / Mark Knopfler collaboration of 'Nivram'.
The CD format was only available for a rather short time. Hank / Shadows collectors purchased it at this time, but Knopfler / Dire Straits collectors got to know about it possibly too late.
A kind of hype arose in 1994 and the one or other collector payed an unreasonable price to get hold of a copy. Thus this release got the tag of a rarity and sow and then dealers think that they might make a deal (which I doubt).
BTW, the vinyl single is still available for around 10 quids, whereas the CD and cassette rarely crop up.

It indeed was for quite a few years, but "Nivram" has been reissued in 2015 on the Hank Marvin 5 CD box "Guitar Solo - His Complete Recordings 1982-1995", which features the albums "Words And Music", "All Alone With Friends", "Into The Light", "Heartbeat" and "Hank Plays Cliff".

Hi Ivo,
Many thanks for reminding me of this set. I had completely forgotten that this version of 'Nivram' was included as a bonus.
Best wishes,
Ulrich

That's indeed way too much for this CD. I think it was a mid-priced CD back in 1998 and it's most likely not in print anymore, but I don't think anyone is going to pay GBP 167.
