Why do I have to keep logging in?

Postby Tone » 06 Feb 2010, 13:26

Hi

Despite having ticked the box on the log in page to log me in automatically on each visit, I'm finding that I'm having to log in again every two or three days.

Can I (or Admin) do anything about this?

Cheers.

Sorry Tony, it's all to do with your browser not something in this program. You've probably got a clash of addresses in your cookie database somewhere.

It may be related to how you are accessing the site and it may settle down after a while or you can try removing all cookies and history.

What browser are you using?

Bob.

Thanks, Bob. I'll try removing cookies and history (I haven't done it for three or four weeks).

I'm using IE8 with Windows XP.

Cheers.

If you use Firefox then you will stay logged in to this site until you clear cookies.

I also use IE8 under XP and have no problem staying logged on to the site. In fact, I access the site from two different PCs, the other being a Vista machine also running IE8.

I only ever have to log in if I have deleted the cookies from a browsing session.

It could be that your security settings are too high; mine are set as medium-high under the security tab and medium under privacy in the internet options.

Another thing has just sprung to mind; after entering a userid/password a box opens to ask if you want windows to remember them. If you click "no" then they might not be being saved on your PC to be found the next time you visit the site.

Obviously you should only use this option on a PC which no-one else uses.

I hope this helps.

I disagree with Tom re passwords. You should never let Windows store any passwords. Even though you are the only user, your PC could be hacked and the pwd file read.

The use of good antivirus/antimalware software in conjunction with a firewall should mean that you can save passwords without fear.

Unless you have downloaded something that will allow someone else to take over your PC then there should not be a problem.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of scaremongers out there who over-dramatise the risks of saving data on your PC. Mostly put out by vendors of anti-malware products who tend to be the ones who create it in the first place to get you to buy their extremely dodgy products.

Anyway, I will not get into an argument over this point; if anyone wants to do that then they can do so in private. I only wanted to suggest reasons why some people have to log in everytime they visit the site.
