I've got the Duane Eddy version from this series. From Holland I believe.

Very good quality throughout & a cheap buying price.....can't go wrong in my view 8-)

I'll be buying this set

Very possibly. A high-quality recording is reputed to exist.

Yes, the Paris Olympia "Musiscorama" tapes have been on the shelf for a long time. Could be interesting if they have been used for this release.

The "Musicorama" was a radio show every tuesday (rest day for the normal Olympia program) on radio Europe 1. I remember I listened at home to the Shadows' one, but the sound was not very good as it was aired on LW (no FM at this time for E1).
A small record company bought the Musicorama tapes from E1 et issued some of the shows on CD, but not for the Shadows' one, as they couldn't get the rights. I know a few people who have bootleg copies, but I don't have one myself.

Surely under the recently changed law, Apache and all other tracks which have recently turned 50 years old are once again covered by copyright. It was extended to 70 years not too long ago (possibly within the last six weeks). The news received national coverage.

I just wonder if any of the money from the sales of this "new" Cd will ever make its way back to whatever constitutes The Shadows now.

Hi Justin,
I don't believe that the new 70 year rule is actually on the statute books as yet. The principle / agreement that the expiration of copyright (re: recorded musical works) itself should be extended from the current 50 years to 70 years has been agreed upon but I don't think that it's actually enshrined in law as yet. The legal process is going to take a little longer - possibly another 12 months or so at least. So....it may give scope for the 'reissue' labels to cover some releases from 1962. But....there's no doubt that the new law will be passed just in time to prevent anyone and everyone from reissuing the Beatles' back catalogue for free. Fancy that, eh?? Of course, there may be leagal / music copyright experts on this site who know much more about it. But....I think that all manner of cheap reissues can continue for about another year or so...but it will be a different story after that.

Bests.....Rob :D

The BBC Radio Saturday Club session stuff from 1959 must be sourced from off-air recordings, as no such content was retained in the Sound Archives. :(

The refusal to issue this material in an official release through EMI etc means that we Shadows fans will have to resort to issues like this, which exploit the grey area of the law. If this material were to be released completely officialy, I would be more than happy to buy it. As I have said on more than one occasion, The Beatles did not suffer in any way by releasing the Anthology series on CD. Nobody looked down or even commented upon the fact that some of the material was less than top notch quality and so MacCartney, Harrison, Starkey and Ono were able to laugh all the way to the bank, again. I believe that even Pete Best and the family of Stuart Suttcliffe were given a pay out. Time is passing by very quickly and interest in The Shadows will end soon as the fanbase passes on, the archived material will soon have no value, commercial or otherwise so The Shadows may as well have one last payday, or donate the proceeds to charity.

In recent times I have been in touch with EMI about similar releases to this one as well as a potential celebratory reissue of "The Shadows" (as it was the 50th anniversary of the FIRST LP by a BRITISH GROUP to TOP the LP CHARTS - surely an occasion to celebrate / acknowledge????) - possibly with bonus material.

In short....they were not interested in the slightest - basically saying that it wouldn't be financially worth their while to consider any such releases and they suggested that there weren't many Shadows around nowadays & those that were wouldn't be interested!! I did point out to them the existence of the Shadow Music site....the many, many Shadows Clubs and WORLDWIDE interest - not to mention the phenomenal attendances during the Shadows' own Farewell Tours and the Cliff / Shadows Final Tour - but...they still weren't interested. Shortly after this (& I just use it as an example) - they put out a 6 - CD set of everything recorded by Adam Faith at EMI. I don't recall the exact stats....but it was c. 160 tracks - all remastered, first - time stereo releases, previously unissued tracks, first time on CD tracks etc., etc. Now......no disrespect to Adam Faith....but compared to the Shadows, his following nowadays must be fairly insignificant. The fact is.....EMI banged on to me...how putting out Shadows product (similar to "As Good As It Gets...") would be not worth their while. Yet.....a 6 CD set (as described) by Adam Faith apparently is!!!! It defies logic. So, believe me.....I've tried several times during the past couple of years to get some different / decent Shadows product out there....all to no avail.
