Val's blonde guitar...

I haven't got time to do it right now, but I am half way through a response to this one, currently in draft form.

Let it suffice at this stage to say that the guitar is not UK-made, and certainly not a Clifford Essex.

Val's guitar (single cutaway blonde archtop f hole) looks German- mid-late '50's/early '60's- possibly Hofner, Hoyer, Framus, Hopf, etc- although it looks as though it has a Burns TriSonic pickup fitted!

There's a lot of websites on German guitars of that era- away you go!

It is true that Val gave the guitar to Martin Taylor, who presumably still has it.

I'm still researching and drafting my main response to the Val Doonican guitar question, but for those who can gain access to Facebook (which is a much more valuable research and information tool than some might think), I recommend that you read this thread from as little as three months ago. The guys who instigated the thread are the world experts on German made guitars, a category which includes far more than the well-known Hofner, Framus, Klira and Hopf brands.

That's compelling evidence there Jim, thanks for showing us all of this. Val's guitar certainly has those tell tale features and Clifford Essex favoured a totally different headstock to that of Oskar Teller. Great stuff and most informative.

I saw Martin Taylor play Val's guitar at a gig in High Wycombe, I think just after Val had given it to him. It would have been around the time of Martin's 'Spirit of Django' cd releases, and my memory, which may be flawed, is saying Hofner.
