Jet Harris Guitar Book

Postby George Geddes » Sun Sep 07, 2014 11:22 am

This is something which has always puzzled me - an album of sheet music with 6 tunes and a couple of photographs.

At the time it appeared, I assumed that it was to tie in with a forthcoming LP and these were some of the tracks which would feature on the record. As we know, no such record ever appeared, and the only number which has ever surfaced in a Jet version was 'The creep'.

So was my original assumption correct, or was it simply an attempt to cash in on Jet's solo career? Who knows...

A very good question George - I have a copy of the book and the only other clue is in the fact that it mentions :-

Copyright 1963 by Robbins Music Corporation Ltd 23, Denmark St. London W.C.2.

Selling agents : Francis, Day & Hunter

The tunes contained are :-

The Green Leaves of Summer
Temptation
Blue Moon
Should I
The Creep
High Noon

All of these listed titles would no doubt have suited being played on the lower strings as Jet did at the time.
I remember reading in the N.M.E. around mid 63 that some titles had been recorded for a forth coming Jet&Tony
LP, including a vocal called San Miguel? but that has never surfaced on any Decca compilation, so as George says
who knows what the true story might be?

That's interesting. On the Del Shannon tour, it was just the Tony Meehan Combo and Tony sang San Miguel. An old Kingston Trio number. Probably from the same album as All my Sorrows.

Hi Stuart,
I guess Tony must have been a Kingston Trio fan!
"All My Sorrows" came from the album 'At Large' - their first studio stereo album, and "San Miguel" was from the LP 'Here We Go Again',
and album that had an initial pressing of 250,000 copies and stayed in the charts for two years. That must have been some sort of 'record'
in those early days.
Would love to have heard Tony's version.
Cheers,
JB

'San Miguel' was recorded by Jet & Tony on 19th June 1963 along with 'Yes It's Me I'm In Love Again' with the Decca references DR 31183 and DR 31184 , music director was Tony Meehan, lost in the vaults along with the Jet Harris recording of 'Wondrous Place' recorded on 13th June 1962 Decca reference DR 29384 music director Charles Blackwell.

These titles have now been recorded by Per Oydir/ Colin Pryce Jones/ John Tuck as either a
vinyl 7inch release or download via Amazon etc
It is called" The Jet Harris Song Book " so that is what to type in for a search on the net.
