Rock n' Roll medley (PROPER link!)

Postby drakula63 » Tue Jun 13, 2017 6:11 pm

Apart from the singer, I recognise Mr Marvin, Mr Hawkshaw and Mr Richmond. No idea about the others. Can't see if Olivia N-J is part of the backing group but my guess is probably not. (No) The false start at the beginning is funny. Proves they are miming. Cliff's got a good sun tan!

P.S. Never seen this before today. My guess is that it's about 1972. Now I shall continue watching it... :D

P.S. 1970.

And again,,,

Just watched it all the way through. Despite the fact that they are miming to an instrumental track, it's pretty good. Looks/sounds like all the vocals are live. An unsual version of Move It, from Hank's point of view, but Dr. Hawkshaw seems to be enjoying himself. I am guessing that the three backing singers might be 'The Ladybirds'? One does look a bit like Pat Farrar, but can't be. Any ideas as to the identities of the left-handed guitarist and the drummer (I bet they are both very well known session men and someone is bound to say 'Ronnie Verrell and Vic Flick'. All this an Una Stubbs too. Those were the days...

Oh, and I can't help feeling slightly envious of the happy looking chappy sitting in the front row! No wonder he looks so cheerful... :D ;)

Hi,

The clip comes from the "Cliff In Scandinavia" show which was broadcasted on 26.12.1970 by the Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish TV.
The full set was Summer Holiday - In The Country - Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon - Congratulations - Raindrops Keep Falling... - Something (Hank solo) - Happy Days - I'll Remember It Well - C'mon Everybody - Louisianna - Johnny B. Goode - Yellow River - Move It - Wake Up Little Suzie - Do You Wanna Dance - Zorba's Dance
There is a comment reported by Hank about "Zorba's Dance": That's great! An English boy and a Finnish girl sing in Sweden a Greek song played on a Spanish guitar manufactured in Hong Kong out of Norwegian wood in German style! (reported by the late Bo Larsson early in 1971).
In the German club mag the female backing is reported as The Breakaways.

Hope this helps.

Would it be sensible to assume that the same group here would be the same group backing Cliff in the "Cliff at Skansen" video(s)? If so, then the backing group is, as Ulrich suggested, The Breakaways (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Breakaways) who backed him at Eurovision in '68.

The whole Skansen video is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nl2jE6UAJWI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5oeh89lTCU

I don't have the patience to watch it all and see if he introduces the band, but the lineup looks same as the other videos above (except with Norrie Paramor conducting a - presumably local? - orchestra). The credits only list Cliff, Hank and Norrie P.

Cheers

Regarding the music/sketch show, it was called Cliff In Scandinavia and was made by the BBC, directed by Michael Hurll (as was the live concert video I posted above). There's no record of the concert in the BBC archive so I assume that was made for Scandinavian TV. The sketch show has a limited record, the description of which is:
Special made in Sweden, Norway & Finland starring Cliff RICHARD with Hank MARVIN, Una STUBBS, Cia LOWGREN, Anne-Lise GJOSTOL, Pirjo VIITANEN, The Break- aways, The Christians & The Shadows.

...and that's it! Nobody other than those listed above are recorded as contributors, so no more clues as to who the band are (it's certainly not The Shadows!)

Cheers

Well... Two or three of them are! OK, two officially and one 'associate member'...
