Pop videos

Postby howarddobson » 01 Sep 2017, 22:29

Hello everyone

I just wondered if the Shads had ever made a proper pop video.

I've seen the TOTP clips and appearances on programmes - but not really pop videos. You'd think some videos would have helped some excellent 80s singles to become hits.

Thinking about it - perhaps there was a video for Shadowsmix.

Singing the Blues from 2009 would have been better with a vid to back it up - they could have filmed it around the time of the Royal Variety Show.

Hi! Howard,
I have a vague recollection of a 'vid' being shown on TOTP(??) to accompany Hank's 'London's Not Too Far'. I can vaguely remember a little girl standing at the front door watching the rain coming down, then returning to the lounge, where her father is reading the paper. He puts the paper down, and, behold! it's our own hero....Hank!
Have I dreamed this? Or, finally, is there no hope for me? and must I just wait for Junior to choose which home I end up in?
Best wishes,
Mart.

"Let Me Be The One", "It'll Be Me Babe", "Love Deluxe", "Theme From The Deer Hunter (Cavatina)" and "Equinoxe (Part V)" all exist as pop videos or promos.

Hi Mart

There is hope for you because I remember that video. And, if I recall correctly, Hank was even smoking a pipe (or pretending to)!

Cheers.

Tone,
I thought I'd seen him with a pipe, but dismissed it from the recollection as being unlikely. Perhaps the old synapses are functioning after all! (Hold that decision, boy!)

I seem to remember Flingel Bunt featuring in a B&W video on TOTP when it was released in '64. It was shot in Brussels around the Atomium.

Yes there is dramatised video around from TV shows but by the time the likes of Godley'n'Creme were turning pop video into an art form, the Shads were part-timers who came together once a year to make an album, sell it off the back of a tour and go back home again. The investment in a big production video would not probably have been repaid in sales. That's my guess.
