Hi Iain
Brisbane Shadows Players (Brisbane, Australia) is still going strong after 6 years. We meet on the 2nd Sunday of the month at Enoggera Bowls Club from 12 noon to 4pm and play entirely with live backing with a playlist/roster organised in advance which usually closes 2 weeks before each meeting.

Our website is

I attend the Quarry Bank Music club at Sheffield Street,Quarry Bank, Dudley, West Mids. It meets twice a month on , usually the first & third Monday evening . It is not restricted to any particular music genre, & has a reasonable variation of popular music, & regular 'Shads/Instro' contributions from myself & friends & some others, which get enthusiastic applause, for it's novelty in this modern age. Even the younger members enjoy it.
The club provides a quality PA & set of radio mikes, & a Roland electronic drumkit.

Tony.

I find it a very disturbing trend that many Shadows Clubs are drifting (no pun intended!) away from the Shadows.

If any of the ones I attend did that, I think I'd turn up, play a couple of my shadows-style compositions using backing tracks, and go home again.

I guess the tragic reality is that we old Shadows Players who grew up with them and have idolised them for nearly 60 years are a dying breed. I am 71, and I would estimate the average age of BSP to be mid to late 60's. We have had the occasional younger guitarist play at meetings, but they seem to move into more trendy genres and walk away. We never use BTs and Shadows music would make up around 70% of a normal meeting. We also allow other guitar instrumental numbers and sometimes vocals - predominately Cliff. We have a strong core membership and there is a lot of effort by most performers to perform to a high standard and include more challenging and less common numbers. We work from an online roster which is part of our website which works very well. I would think that a realistic transition toward a general 60s rock'n'roll group is inevitable over the next 10 to 20 years as there is wide support for rock vocals amongst younger people - particularly from age 50 up. The U.K. may be different, but that's the situation here. I am a newbie on this forum and could post videos by BSP club members if that's appropriate to provide an indication of the standard of our musical tributes. We have posted some on Charlie's site over the years.

This may be a lone opinion, but the reason that I stopped going to the Surrey club was that it was just too relentless. There were a lot of people who wanted to play and the result was that there were no breaks, no gaps in the music. The volume wasn't excessive but it was at a level that even a comment to someone on the same table meant leaning over and shouting.

I enjoyed the music, but I felt that the evening needed a break, or breaks, in the same way that a concert has an interval, a chance to move around and socialise. Once everyone on 'the list' had played, it started again from the top with the aim of another tune each before closing time. The organisers were in a difficult position, trapped by their own success with lots of players wanting to show off their talents (and there were some very good players), but as a listener there were just too many tunes without a break.

In reply to Ray -
I attend the Surrey Club as often as possible.
I also attend the South Coast and South Wales clubs.

I don't see any difference in the "relentless" approach to the organisation between the clubs.
At the Surrey Club one can socialise in the breaks when players are changing over - go into the very wide hallway (which has chairs and tables) or the pool room.

Many of us travel great distances to support the clubs - for me the Surrey Club is a 120 mile round trip. So giving all the players as much time as possible is a good thing.
If we can get round the list several times - great.

I applaud the support bands for the time in setting up / backing us all and breaking down. I sit there / play and think how lucky I am.

Please keep it coming.
