It was The Shads; Jet said in an interview once that trying to get four guys round a mike to do whistling...they kept cracking up! Hey that would be a good gig, wouldn't it? Session whistler! Shame I can't whistle...

Mussy Marcellino!

The greatest of them all - he did everything from the original version of The High And The Mighty theme to the wonderful middle eight in Hugo Montenegro's Theme from The Fox:

I heard on a radio program might have been on Radio Luxembourg Cliff said he did some whistling on Stars Fell on Stockton so that would make it five, I suppose that they overdubbed the instrumental track.the Shadows said this was the first record that featured Brian Bennett.

...and of course there was Whistling Jack Smith. The clue was in the name...! Was he a real person? Probably quicker to Google...!

Whistling Jack Smith wasn't a real person. The whistling on the record I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman was performed by John O'Neill (1926-99), a singer and trumpeter from County Durham, who was paid a session fee and never got a credit or any royalties. When the single appeared on Top Of The Pops, an actor mimed to the record.

Credited as Johnny O'Neill, he sung the theme song to the American TV series. Wagon Train.
