Return to the Alamo controversy.

Postby drakula63 » Mon Nov 27, 2017 7:26 pm

One of the best Shadows compositions without a doubt. But beneath this youtube video, the comments suggest that the tune was 'ripped-off' by a Bollywood composer. Has anyone got anymore info on this?

Thanks!

Good grief! It's the the same tune! Even the string arrangements! I hope they got some royalties, because they don't seem to have received any credit that I can see. Maybe in those days, the Bollywood plagiarists, sorry, I mean 'composers', thought that no one would ever find out? Thank you Youtube!!!

My 25-year-old girlfriend is a quarter Indian. She has been exposed to more Indian culture than Western (even though she spent most of her formative years in Canada - go figure!). She's known the Punjabi vocal version of this song for years but hadn't heard of The Shadows (or the original version) before meeting me.

From what I looked up The Shadows Return to the Alamo released 1977
Akele Hain to aka Gum Hai released 1988
Be interested to hear any further information

Pete

Copied this from Wikipedia as follows:

The music for "Akele Hain To Kya Gum Hai" is copied from the instrumental number "Return to the Alamo" by the band The Shadows.

There are still parts of the world which have a rather cavalier attitude to intellectual property...

RTTA was originally to be called 'Treasure Island' I believe, but I think the newer title is better. Classic sound and melody, timeless arrangement by NP.

I would be surprised if Brian Goode didn't know about this Bollywood number.

Mind you these things works both ways. Compare this song

with this one

Or (same song this time) this arrangement

with this one
