Shadow Music question

Postby Fenderman » Tue Jul 31, 2018 3:06 pm

I have a stereo vinyl copy of Shadow Music and i just noticed that side 2 of the LP lists the copyright date as 1965, i know the LP was issued in May 1966 so this is a mistake, do i have a collectors item? Was many printed this way? Just in case, the matrix on side 2 is YAX-3065-1
Let me know, thanks in advance.

The Discogs links to the Shadow Music album are quite interesting...

https://www.discogs.com/The-Shadows-Sha ... se/1907115

By clicking on the album cover image it is then possible to view the labels of the mono issue (SX 6041) which show the pub. year as 1965.

https://www.discogs.com/The-Shadows-Sha ... se/8375325

The second link is to the stereo issue (SCX 6041), and a similar route to the label images shows both sides with the pub. year as 1966 (and your quoted side 2 matrix, less the -1), so, who knows, you may indeed be in possession of a great rarity! :)

Hi Roy,

Unfortunately no collectors item. The complete first pressing, mono and stereo, had the wrong publishing date. It was only corrected for the stereo release some time later, which most likely had less number pressed compared with the first pressing.

If you are after a collectors item you should look out for the mono release with the dead wax matrix number XAX 3064-2G on side 1. This is the only source for tha alternative version of "Benno-San".

Good luck.

Well well. I used to have that exact LP! Not any more though. The alternative version of Benno San isn’t nearly as good as the proper stereo version. I’ve probably thrown away a fortune ... :(

I've got both the very first UK mono pressing of "Shadow Music", which was available only for about three weeks and the second UK mono pressing of the album, which features the stereo-to-mono-mixdown version of "Benno-San". I also have the first UK stereo pressing of the album.
Both mono records have a publishing date of 1965 on their record labels, but 1966 on the back of their sleeves. As has been mentioned above, the record labels of the stereo issue have 1966 as a publishing date.

Thanks! I thought i had a rarity in my collection, but another question, what's that note on the back about titles being changed? Is that another rare feature on early pressings or is it just Shadows humour?

For what it's worth:
My copy, bought at the time of release, has two publishing dates - the cover SX 6041 shows 1966 Mono whilst the record shows SX 6041 1965. The XAX.3064 is there but without the -2G.

"Only the titles have been changed to protect the composers"?

That's a punning reference to the USA police TV series 'Dragnet' - "Names have been changed in order to protect the innocent".

Ivo,

The first pressing of the stereo version of "Shadow Music" had 1965 on both labels:

Graham,

The matrix numbers as I have mentioned them are only in the dead wax of the vinyl, not on the label:

All sleeves have the correct publishing date 1966.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ulrich,

Thank you for that. I should have checked my copy of The Shadows File ;) ! The stereo copy I was referring to, must be a second pressing then. It's my father's and he has bought it way back in 1966, fairly shortly after its original release.
