High Class Baby

Postby Derek Mowbray » Wed Sep 26, 2018 8:21 pm

Found this video on You Tube from the Cliff Richard channel ,this must be the earliest video of Cliff and The Drifters as they were then. But the strangest thing is you can only see Jet Harris ,and Terry Smart who is only playing one drum ,Jet is playing his Framus bass, but there is no sign of Hank or Bruce they joined the group before Jet did .On the tape you can hear a piano playing and vocal backing , the Oh Boy shows were live no miming so perhaps members of the resident band were playing also the vocals could have been done by the Dallas Boys. This must be the only video to feature Terry Smart.

Does anyone know what happened to Terry Smart? The last i heard was he had joined the Merchant Navy.

Jet and Terry are miming, it's the resident band- 'Lord Rockingham's Eleven' playing live backing Cliff..including vocal backing.

Great footage, very much of its time.

According to the unreliable Wikipedia he was born in 1942, which makes him just a few months younger than Bruce. Not in the navy now, I'd say!

He's faded into obscurity, for all we know he may no longer be with us. He never came forward and did any interviews.

I saw the entire episode of Oh Boy! at the NFT earlier this year, and was also puzzled by the absence of Bruce & Hank. I can understand that Lord Rockingham's XI did the backing, but why show just two of The Drifters? All or nothing you would have thought.

The John Barry Seven was also on the bill, but although they were apparently playing "live" (presumably this was always a requirement of the "live" show?) it was clearly their recording of Farrago that could be heard.

We can only assume that this was overdubbed afterwards for the telerecording, but not why.
