Final piece of the Jigsaw...

Postby drakula63 » Thu Jan 24, 2019 2:17 pm

Just arrived from Japan. This CD version of Jigsaw, bought on Ebay...

As far as I know, this is the final piece of the, er, jigsaw! I now have EVERY Shadows album on CD. Haven't opened this one yet properly, but it looks immaculate and was a bargain at just £10.34 and a couple of quid for P&P - especially when someone is trying to sell a 'used' one on Amazon for £80 plus!

So, the picture is now complete. I suppose I'd better start collecting them on cassette now! :D

Looks nice indeed! When was this CD issue released? Does it feature the mono album, stereo album or both?

This is a brandnew release (29.12.2018).
The tracklisting is:

04. CATHY'S CLOWN
05. STARDUST
06. SEMI DETACHED SURBURBAN MR JAMES
07. TRAINS AND BOATS AND PLANES
08. FRIDAY ON MY MIND
09. WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL

13. WITH A HMM-HMM ON MY KNEE
14. GREEN EYES

BONUS TRACKS
15. MAROC 7
16. BOMBAY DUCK

I don't have my copy yet but as I have understood it, all tracks are in stereo.

On the same date OLDAYS Japan reissued Brian Bennett's "Change Of Direction" (no Bonus tracks).

I hope this helps.

I played the first three tracks earlier and they sounded as if they were in stereo.

The CD comes in a replica LP sleeve, which is thicker than such things usually are and has a proper spine with 'The Shadows Jigsaw' printed on it. There is also an insert with all the titles in English and the song writing credits on one side and Japanese text on the other. I got two of these.

Anyone else hear Tennessee Waltz last night...along with FBI, Man of Mystery and various other '60s recordings in a BBC documentary about modern kids going to a recreated '60s secondary modern school? I nearly fell out of my seat when I heard that opening TW chord coming out of the telly...!

Hi Ulrich, thank you for the tracklisting and related information. I have never heard of the OLDAYS label from Japan. Is it a legitimate label by the way?

Interesting about the Shads tunes on the programme last night. Didn't watch it. However... later last night I sat and watched (on DVD) a couple of episodes of the (as they say) fondly-remembered children's TV show GRANGE HILL. As someone who started secondary school in 1976 and left school in 1981, this series (set in a secondary school) means so much to me and it's great to see it again. There is, of course, a Shadows connection as the theme tune was written (albeit as a piece of library music) by Alan Hawkshaw - he actually gets a credit on the back cover of the DVD. As I am now rapidly approaching my 2000th post (!), I must think carefully and make sure it's a good 'un.

Hi Ivo,
Oldays is one of the many legitimate labels re-issueing recording which are 50 years and more old.
Up to now they have released 7 CDs with Cliff/Shadows connection.
The full catalog can be viewed at http://oldays.merurido.jp/catalog.php
Hope this is of help.

Thank you for the link. These releases look very well done. They remind me of the releases by Magic Records: reissues of original 1960's (and a few 1970's) albums, with carefully selected bonus tracks from the same period as the album and first rate presentation and sound quality. Another candidate to reissue would be the Japanese album "The Shadows In Japan" from November, 1967, with this tracklisting:

1. Omoide No Nagisa (Beach Of Memories).
2. Kimi To Itsumademo (Till Eternity With You).
3. Londonderry Air.
4. The Tokaido Line.
5. Alentejo.
6. Evening Glow.
7. The Wild Roses (Nobara Saku Michi).
8. Gin-Iro No Michi (Silver-Colour Road).
9. Naughty Nippon Nights.
10. A Thing Of Beauty.
11. Let Me Take You There.
12. Holy Cow.
Bonus tracks:
13. Maroc 7. (The 'talking' intro version from the 1967 demo single, with the intro and track itself cross-faded).
14. Bombay Duck. (Original mono single version).
15. I Can't Forget. (Mono mix).
16. Running Out Of World. (Alternative edited mono version from the Yugoslav flexi-disc single).
17. Running Out Of World. (Original mono single version).
18. Running Out Of World. (Alternative undubbed version with count-in in mono).
19. Running Out Of World. (Alternative undubbed version with count-in in stereo).
