Suggested titles for a new Hank Marvin album

Postby Shadsguy » Sun Nov 10, 2019 2:33 am

I really enjoyed Hank's 2017 album without a word fantastic track selection
I would enjoy hearing more tracks from the classic 50s, 60s and maybe 70s
Tracks I would enjoy to hear Hank Style are
Roy Orbison In Dreams
John Denver Annie's Song
Matt Monro Portrait Of My Love/Softly As I Leave You
The Carpenters Sing
Elvis Love Me Tender/I Can't Help Falling In Love
The Scorpions Winds Of Change
Perry Como It's Impossible/And I Love You So/For The Good Times
Theme From Bergerac
These titles would sound fantastic as Hank style guitar instrumentals would be interested in hearing other members views and suggestions
I'm Gavin just joined this fantastic forum and would like to say hello and introduce myself to the site members

That's putting it somewhat harsh I think, but I agree that the emphasis sometimes has been put too much on other people's music, especially from the "Guitar Player" album onwards, despite the fact that I all quite like those albums. After the "Heartbeat" album from 1993, there was talk about Hank's next album (to be released in 1994 or 1995) consisting entirely of original tracks, but the next album was the first in a series of five "Hank Plays..." albums.

Now now people! It’s easy for us armchair generals to puff our pipes and say “he shouldn’t have done that” or “why doesn’t he do this?”

He does what he does because it’s what he decides to do. It’s open to us to buy it or not buy it. That’s it.

Nothing wrong with offering a few good ideas, of course. And no reason why another player couldn’t pick up on those ideas and give them a go.

Sorry if that sounds grumpy! Now, where’s my pipe?

Hank has responded to critical remarks from fans about doing other people's music in interviews. He has said that no one ever questions orchestras doing classical music, which is often centuries old and guitarists like Eric Clapton covering blues standards, so covering or rather interpreting songs as instrumentals in a unique arrangement should be in the same category. I have to agree with Hank here.

Welcome Gavin! There are a few of these titles people have done on youtube and likes in a shadows style so would be worth checking out if not already.

I must say i really enjoyed the likes of Hank plays cliff and Holly and the guitar player album where songs were reworked in to arrangements different to the original and id like to see and album like those again.

'The Shadows - and Sons' - a double CD set re-working classic rock 'n roll hits and western themes by Hank Marvin with appearances by Bruce, Brian and special guests Warren, Ben and the City of Prague Philharmonic. Produced by Warren this new album revisits and expands the sound of the 'golden era' of guitar instrumentals, complete with Vox amps and vintage echo machines. No?!

I also really like the "Hank Plays..." albums: "Hank Plays Cliff", "Hank Plays Holly", "Hank Plays Live", "Hank Marvin And The Shadows Play The Music Of Andrew Lloyd-Webber And Tim Rice" and "Marvin At The Movies". Of those, I think overall "Hank Plays Holly" is the best.

I have always thought that Hank or The Shadows should do an album of classic instrumentals from the 1960`s by other groups they have done Walk Don`t Run and Telstar ,suggestions ,Wipe Out, Wheels,Trambone, The Cruel Sea ,Teen Scene, Let There Be Drums ,and some others.

I always kinda expected a Hank plays ABBA album...but it never materialized.
I reckon the royalty check to Sweden would be a very steep one.... :D
