There's a thud at the end of either the mono or stereo versions of Fly me to the moon and not on the other, haven't got the CD to hand to check which makes me think there was 2 takes.

That's right. It's an unintended knock on the body of the acoustic guitar by either Hank or Bruce. This is audible on the mono version, but not on the stereo version. The mono and stereo versions are both the same take, but the 'knock' has been edited out on the stereo version.

Arpeggio wrote:So many of these minor 'sounds off' etc. Maybe it should be a separate topic - so as not to hijack the original "F City" theme. For example - at the end of the stereo mix of "T T F T O You Love", someone can be quite clearly heard clapping during the fade out. Brian Bennett admonishes the culprit with "Don't clap!". It can only really be discerned under headphones. :)

I played my version from 'The first 20 years' and there was no 'don't clap' but i did hear a (very) faint clap just at the fade out point.

Returning to the main subject, we always assumed that was a whistle in Frightened City and used a whistle every time we played the piece on stage. A policeman‘s whistle seemed to fit the edginess of the track and the theme of the movie - “the men ... the women ,,, the evil of a city’s underworld.“ The whistle easily cut through the mix too.

We studied (for the nth time) Frightened City when we practiced last week. We hadn't gotten together during the lockdowns. To reacquaint everyone with the original Shadows recording, we all listened to the track at a good volume on the PA system. After the "whistle," I stopped the record and blew our whistle. Our new drummer was astonished and asked if I had ordered the whistle from some Shadows specialist. It sounded identical to the "whistle" in the recording.

Then I read this thread.

I asked my wife to listen to the recording on good headphones. "A whistle," she said, "it even fades out at the end." She's no expert, but subject to further advice here, I think we'll continue to use the whistle.

Hi Andy,

You've got us all "whistle" chasing now, it seems more prominent in this video:

I don't what it is, but apparently it's on a live recording!

That video has been dubbed with the original recording - here's the live version (with no "whislte, or whatever it is)

Hi Cliff,

Thanks for that, I must admit I was a bit surprised by this as I had never heard it on a (notionally) live recording before, well to be perfectly honest I had not noticed it on any recording before!

I did look at the post to see if it was the first of April! LOL

Kind regards

Jet was really the showman, wasn’t he. A star. I was reminded of the scene in A Chorus Line where the director rebukes Cassie for standing out in the chorus.

To quote a term in the thread heading: 'Experts'... or anoraks! - there's probably a very thin dividing line between the two. It's very much a lads thing and the spice of life for me as well. :)

I've just read this re-activated topic for the first time.

I always thought that to be elevated to the position of "expert" one must currently, or previously, have held the office of "anorak"
