Frightened City Question for the Experts

Postby Teflon » Sun May 23, 2021 10:08 pm

Probably well known on the forum, however, a new discovery for me. After 50 plus years of listening to, and loving, "The Frightened City" I 've noticed an odd noise (a bit like a car horn) that can be heard at around the 1:28 mark :o .

Does anyone here know what it is?

I know the sound you mean. I heard it the first time I ever played the record in the early 1960s.

I suspect that it's finger noise on a wirewound (roundwound) string. The same thing is prominent on part of Peace Pipe.

Try this version Dave, at around 1:28 just as the last note of Hanks "solo" fades:

I first noticed it recently on a backing track I downloaded that was made from the original recording with lead guitar removed. Without Hanks guitar in the mix, the sound was quite prominent, and I just assumed it was an error in the BT. I've since played the full original recording and was surprised to find the same sound present. I now find that I miss the sound when I listen to any cover versions!

You're probably right - it has to be something like that. Does sound odd though, and once you hear it, you can't un-hear it (is that even a word?).

Sounds to me like a high ringing sound, the sort of thing you get if you strum the strings behind the nut.

Yes, better than my "car horn" comparison. I wonder if Norrie, or perhaps Malcolm Addy, were trying to call time on the Hank and the group
