What's the point?

Others have already made all the obvious and pertinent observations!

What's the point? The point is that only 2 (initially) out of 93 expressed an opinion that it might (or might not) be Tony Meehan. OK there are many, many, many more guitarists on here. So, even so, my point is that I would really value the thoughts of many Shadows experts on this site (yourself included Jim) of whether or not they think that it is indeed Tony - or not.

Should we also merely say - 'What's the point' whilst discussing whether or not "Atlantis" was played on a Burns or a Strat? True - there are lots of really fine guitarists who can give a considered and worthy opinion. I am just asking Shadows' fans / experts of very - long standing - for their thoughts. That's all. Nothing more, nothing less.

Cheers.....Rob :D

Do we have a date for this Rob, i.e. is it before or after the release of the Shads' first LP?

Hi Alan, Tony left the Shads early in October, 1961 and joined Decca just before the end of December, 1961. For c.11 weeks - he was at 304, Holloway Rd - where he did some early arranging for Joe Meek as well as playing drums (uncredited) on several RGM releases. I only put 'audition' on the clip because that what Alan Blackburn wrote in 1982 (when Tony's brief sojourn at 304 was either unknown or forgotten).
Bests....Rob

I'm a drummer (after a fashion), and I think it sounds like Tony Meehan

I have only just found this question! Sorry it took so long...
Yes, this does sound like Tony and "See You In My Drums", and I really can't hear much Brian Bennett in there.
The question is, who else, at that time, might it have been?
Ans: Clem Cattini, but that seems unlikely.
So I'm going with Yes, this is Tony!

For what it’s worth, just as I cannot say for certain whether Apache was played on a Gretsch or a Fender guitar, I equally cannot say this is Tony. However, there is much about the sound here that is very Tonylike. With the Apache question, we have the recollections of people who were there. Here, we don’t.

It's as close to Tony Meehan's sound and style as I've ever heard. It's either Tony or it's somehow trying to sound like him and doing a very, very good job.
