Hank with a Gibson?

Postby shadowriter » Sat Jan 08, 2022 7:09 pm

I got a copy of Hank Marvin 'Dance with the guitar man' cd for Christmas. On the inside
slip there is a photo of Hank playing what I think is a Gibson. Having never seen Hank with a Gibson
has anyone any info re this photo?

This CD was the subject of a lengthy thread here during the summer. Here’s the link http://shadowmusic.bdme.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=18005

Well Jim, It's the cd from this year 'Dance with the guitar man' a collection of very rare tv recordings 1969-1970.
I wanted it to hear Hank's version of the Duane Eddy hit and I was not disappointed, it was worth the price
for this track alone. Also had tracks from the Joe Brown show which I wanted to hear. The photo is on the inside sleeve.
G0ing to have two paracetamols, a strong coffee and a lie down now, to get over the shock of finding something you've never heard of.

Hmmm...

I didn't buy this CD. Forgot all about it, in fact.

Does it contain anything not available elsewhere?

In the meantime, Hank has been seen with various Gibsons over the years, including:

J-200 (in "The Young Ones" and elsewhere c. 1962)

J-45 jumbo and B-45 12-string dreadnought, circa 1965 to c. 1969

Melody Maker (property of John Farrar) c.1971

Les Paul Deluxe (small pickups) c. 1971

Les Paul Custom c.1971/72

Gibson ES-350 (think: electric version of L-7) in relatively recent times (prob, just trying it out at owner's request) and

Gibson SG Standard (the one with a horseshoe Bigsby) - on Dutch TV - probably borrowed locally in an emergency for a mimed performance on TV.

Maybe others.

I found the record sleeve in question at:

https://www.discogs.com/release/19526011-Hank-Marvin-Dance-With-The-Guitar-Man/image/SW1hZ2U6NjI5OTIyNDk=

The guitar is a Gibson J-45, circa 1965, finished in cherry sunburst. The Shadows had two of them and they were in use until about 1969 (certainly on their Japan and UK tours that year - used for the acoustic songs and sequences).

Thanks.

I see the listing, but there is no button to place the item into my "trolley".

I'll give Leo's Den a ring tomorrow.
