Little B - Collard Greens and Black Eyed Peas

Postby howarddobson » Fri Jun 24, 2022 10:12 am

Hi - I was thinking about the Shads and the various influences in their sound and music.

Obviously there is a lot of rock and roll there and perhaps skiffle but I was also thinking that bee bop jazz was an influence, as this genre established a melody and then improvised around it, as Hank does.

Coincidentally I was then listening to a Bud Powell Blue Note jazz album and thought about how the track Collard Greens and Black Eyes Peas sounds very similar to a Shads track, Little B. So I suppose there must be a bee bop influence there.

My investigations reveal that said track was originally from 1954, so you're very probably right.

Definitely the inspiration for Little B, the piece by Oscar Pettiford is also known as Blues In The Closet...
