It's somewhat ironic that despite Decca's rejection of the Beatles (as pointed out, too, that novice producer, Tony Meehan was also involved in), they would sign the other group of guitars auditioned that day, Brian Poole and the Tremeloes!

"On New Year’s Day 1962, Decca Records auditioned a young Liverpudlian band at their studio in West Hampstead. Within a month, the label had declined the opportunity to sign The Beatles with the damning verdict that “groups of guitars are on the way out”.

It seems to confirm 'Gonzales' was a tribute to the village that sent men to the Alamo, and is not someone's name.
