Even if Quartermasster's Stores had been the A-side, I think the record would have made the top 10.

Quatermasster’s Stores is an excellent number, albeit a cover, and might well have been a hit. However, Apache was an original and came to the attention of young kids like me, and their record-buying parents, because Bert Weedon kept playing the tune on children’s TV. I don’t know how much this helped the Shads’ sales but it’s certainly how the record came into our possession!

Even though they were appearing with Cliff in a show (Stars in Your Eyes) at the London Palladium at the time that Apache was at no. 1, the Palladium management wouldn’t allow them to perform it. How frustrating!

The sound on that recording is very muffled. The guy doing the introduction sounds very muffled, too. shame.

It sounds absolutely fine to me, Ray. Certainly not muffled.

The man doing these videos, Paul Balmer, did those Haynes Manuals on various guitar and bass models. He contacted me after being given my details by Mo Foster. He wanted to borrow my Bass VI (this was at a time before the Pawnshop and Squier versions) in order to use pictures in the Fender Bass(es) Manual.

That book was on sale at the Fender Visitor Center [sic] at Corona, CA when I was there some years ago - and The Secrets are mentioned in the book's Bass VI section!

A good follow-up, although it could easily have been fitted into the Strat video because the second half is identical!

The host makes it sound like the Shads dropped - “gave up on” - Fender for Burns for technical reasons. It feels to me he didn’t want to spend time himself on the videos, which seem like promotions for his service or books? My impressions only.

By the way, by the early 60s, the U.K. was at the cutting edge of performance car design and engineering. Cooper and Lotus were at the top of formula and sports car racing then. They certainly had screwdrivers!
