I love Why Worry, both the original Dire Straits version and also the truly wonderful Everly Brothers rendition.

As an instrumental though, I think not. The melody is too simple to be played by any instrument other than the human voice. Not only that but there is simply too much going on in the background to allow an instrumental version to work. Sorry Chris, but I can't agree with that choice. If the Shads were still a going concern, recording-wise, I would have to put that high on the list of "Tracks I Hope They Leave Alone".

I think The Rolling Stones' Lady Jane would make a fine instrumental.

I would add the Mark Knopfler track 'An American Hero' from his 'Wag the Dog' film soundtrack. I sounds almost as if it was a demo written for The Shadows to record, with a great melody and real 'hit' potential. If you missed this 1998 album of music by Mark for the Hoffman / De Niro film it's a great showcase for Mark's guitar styles.

I have been pondering upon this choice for a few days, if the Shadows really had the creative juices flowing again how about "Bohemian Rhapsody" ?. It could be a classic on the lines of "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue" and "Bermuda Triangle"

In late 1960, USA band The Ramrods recorded Riders In The Sky with the lead taken by a big Duane-style tremolo'd guitar (and with a rhythm borrowed directly from Duane's Detour). It was a UK hit in early 1961and The Shadows would not have contemplated covering somebody else's hit when they, and writers like Jerry Lordan, were able to come up with original hit-making material.

One fascinating aspect of The Ramrods recording is that they had obviously heard The Shadows' Apache (despite it having had almost no exposure in the USA) and they incorporated Hank's ten-note Apache opening/closing phrase into their fade-out.

Thanks Michael. That just confirms my belief that it would make a great Hank track. It just needs an impro section to extend it beyond 'film filler' length and maybe a slight increase in tempo, but what a great melody in the Lordan tradition.
