A side verses B side?

Postby d jones » Wed Mar 10, 2010 5:56 pm

Hi all just been looking at my Duane Eddy singles ( like you do!) and then realised just how many B sides i prefer to the A sides. So knowing a lot of fans love the Shadows own compositions what are your thoughts on the Shadows A's verses B's.Get the vinyl out and start looking for your favourites!
Happy hunting!

For starters, I prefer "It's A Man's World" to ""The Rise and Fall Of Flingel Bunt" and "Trying To Forget The One You Love" is miles better than "Dear Old Mrs Bell".

OK... eyes down... in my opinion (and apart from examples already given by others),

The Breeze And I is better than Foot Tapper

It's Been A Blue Day is better than Shindig

This Hammer is better than Theme For Young Lovers (just listen to the sound of that lead guitar!)

The Miracle is better than Rhythm And Greens

Little Princess is better than Genie With The Light Brown Lamp

Chu-Chi is better than Mary Anne

Late Night Set is better than I Met A Girl

Bombay Duck is better than Maroc 7

Somewhere is better than Tomorrow's Cancelled

Rusk is better than Riders In The Sky (by a country mile or two)

Fender Bender is better than Equinox Pt V

Elevenis is better than Diamonds.

I could never understand the logic of issuing "Rhythm & Greens" as an "A" side with an obviously better number, "The Miracle", as it's "B" side.

It's no surprise that it only got to number 22.............."The Miracle" would have been a much better seller, but was ignored.

Good list,Jim and I agree with most of your choices. And how about I Wish I could Shimmy Like My Sister Arthur being better than The War Lord

I would agree with most of the choices above, but I think that a lot of the Shadows singles were really double A siders rather than having a clear A and B side. However I can't agree with the nomination of The Warlord or Maroc 7, these are two of my favourites, lets put them down as double A siders.

One of my favourite B-sides was Scotch On The Socks. Definitely better than the paired A-side

I agree 100% with the JN list.

I thought R'n'G was a terrific track with fantastic edgy playing by Hank, excellently and effortlessly showing how he could lead the field in other playing styles as well as the one he had made his own. Shame they didn't do it again without the vocals and with yet more brilliant lead guitar in the gaps.

I'm sure the hope was that the film would do well and the single would sell off the back of it.

But yes, The Miracle was perfectly titled....
