Self Promotion

Postby Pedro » Tue Apr 13, 2010 8:18 am

Is this site not in danger of become a platform for self promotion. I joined because I wanted to learn more about HBM &THE SHADOWS.
I really couldn't give a 'tinkers curse' about wannabee Shadows and their own tacit and open self promotion.

Hi Pedro

Perhaps the best way to understand this site is to read what is written on the site's Home page.
The site offers many different opportunities to "learn about" or "take part in" or "discuss" any aspect of the music that we love - In addition to that much can be learnt about the "mechanics" of actually playing the music that we love in addition to getting some input from those closely connected to our heroes.

Despite all of the above benefits perhaps the most important aspect of this site is to help to keep an interest in the music that we love alive - and played - for future players and what better way is there to do this than to encourage others to "take part" even if this seems like self promotion. I think it is great that we have members ranging from experienced musicians (including members of the Shadows themselves) all the way to the very encouraging input from absolute beginners like Rosemary (in Australia) who is being helped to grow in this new interest of hers.
Best wishes
John

At the risk of being assasinated, I have to say that I have a great deal of sympathy for Pedro's views. I wonder if the problem lies with the title of the forum, "General" is just too, well General. Perhaps there could be a forum for "The Shadows" and associated solo outings. perhaps it could be called "Simply Shadows" or something on those lines. I guess that as the Shadows ,etc, are now in a state of limbo there will be less and less to say as time goes by

If you are not interested in something on the site, don't read it. There is no need for derogotary remarks, which are non productive. :|

Oh come on Mr Robinson, surely even you must admit that the General Forum is just too wide now and contains very little that touches upon the real reason we all read this forum ie The Shadows and the various off shoots. I would invite you to look at the first few pages of this section and decide how many threads touch upon the "Band" and how many go off on an ever increasing tangent. I have as big a sense of humour as the next man, but really how can you compare a thread that posts copies of Shadows album sleeves together with reviews, with a Vendetta against a tribute act, or a fellow site members delight at retirement ( Yes, I do envy him !). I understand that the problem with all comment on any forum is that we can not gauge the mood of the poster by the tone of his/her voice and I would not in any way deny you the right to comment but why do you have to be so aggresive when all that Pedro and myself offered was fair comment?.
I would really like to read more debate on this subject, both from the other three moderators and any other Site contributors who dare risk your anger. It really grieves me that there is any anger on this site at all, surely this site is just to talk about one of the worlds greatest Instrumental bands and not to engage in angry debate. :?:

Most things about the Shadows have been discussed in depth over the years ranging from what Hank has for breakfast to intricate and highly technical discussions about the guitars, amplifiers and drum kits.

If you want to know more about The Shadows, it is unlikely you'll find what you're after by browsing the general forum in the hope that someone will write an article on the subject, but by asking a question in People, Guitars and Amplifers or Drums and Drummers should get you an answer.

But remember that members of The Shadows, past and present, are members of this site and would not want details about their personal lives made public so please don't ask. Nicely worded questions about their recordings, live performances or equipment might well lead to an answer from The Shadows themselves, a member of their crew or one of the very knowledgeable members on this site.

ShadowMusic is divided into two main factions: Those who are interested in the people (fans) and those who are interested in the music (musos) either technically or because they want to play it. There are a lot of members who are both. The general forum is, as the name suggests, there for anyone to post anything provided it conforms to the site rules. In the early days it was principally a musos forum where members could exchange information about the technicalities of playing the music and how The Shadows achieved their unique sound. That is why the Sound Files section was created and why people will advertise their gigs - because other members might well want to see someone else playing the music and this is the ideal place to let others know where they are.

The different sections of this site were created to give people like yourself a place to visit where you are most likely to read something of interest. Most people post in General because that's the most likely place to generate a discussion but there's nothing to stop you posting in another forum and discussing something more specific.

Bob.

I'm happy for folk to post whatever they want. If it's self promotion, I don't mind at all. It'll be interesting to some. I agree with Dave, if there's something that doesn't interest me, then I don't read it, but I think the diversity of topics and threads is good, and I've always been very happy with the site.

There's nothing wrong with self-promotion when you are, at the same time, keeping the Shad's music alive. I love the music created by the Shadows but I don't give – what was it? – a tinker's cuss about what colour socks Hank was wearing when he recorded Apache. I don't go to Shadows concerts but I love to play their music and to hear it played, not just by the Shadows, but by people like me who get a great deal of pleasure out of so doing. This is a big website and there is room for everyone. Read and contribute to the topics that interest you and leave the rest alone. It ain't rocket science!
