Radio Play.

Postby captainhaddock » Fri May 28, 2010 10:18 am

I've just heard Kon-Tiki on Radio 2. Although I don't listen to Radio 2 all day , this is only the third Shadows track that I have heard on the Radio this year, with the obvious exception of Foot Tapper on Brian Matthew's show. I must say that it was a breath of fresh air to hear The Shadows on the Radio, but isn't it a shame that it happens so infrequently these days.

Seems they are aiming for a younger audience especially during the day. Hardly any 50/60s stuff on there now, and presenters with big egos - Ross, Evans and Wright spring to mind. Come back Jimmy Young!

This is just a logical progression. How often do they play The Beatles, Stones, Who, Specer Davis Group, Herman's Hermits, ... etc? Few and far between but every now and again.

How often do they play Lonnie Donegan, Guy Mitchell, Johnny Ray, Winifred Atwell, Russ Conway? Once in several blue moons if at all.

How often do they play anything even earlier? Never.

The likes of Sinatra are catered for by special programmes. If Sixties music is to be played regularily on the radio then a specialist programme would need to be broadcast.

What used to be mainstream pop/rock is now MOR and will be played progressively less as the years go by.

Best place to here to hear Shadows tunes these days is the soundtrack to Heartbeat on ITV3. Not only The Shads but loads of other great 60s music.

Hi all. I dont know if GOLD is broadcast in your area but here in S Yorkshire its all 60's on GOLD. They do play The Shadows, Cliff, Elvis, Beatles, Stones etc etc, as I type this its Simon & G, so go for GOLD if your radio can receve it.
Regards Geoff.
ps: Gene Pitney after S&G.

A good idea for in car listening is the Dreamboats and Petticoats CDs. There are currently 3 doubles available! A good selection on each.

It is as they say progression

What was Gold type oldies a few years back such as 50's stuff is now 80's stuff like a 30 year leap, so even Radio 2 is now mimcking Radio 1 of old, even same presenters. We need Radio 6 to give us, platform shoed glam rock, Radio 8 as beaty the mophead crowd or may be even Radio 10 for the geriatric rockers of old and the crepe shoes sound as the quiff brigade :)
