The Shadows' most memorable stage banter

Postby iefje » Tue Aug 02, 2011 2:47 pm

As everyone on this forum will know, our heroes did not only play first-rate music, but were also very capable of entertaining their audience with one-liners or quips during stage banter.

Some of their most memorable, I think, are:

- Hank in March 1978, before introducing Alan Jones and Cliff Hall: "Before we go any further, we'd like to introduce you to two people, who are on stage with us tonight, and, really without whose help, we'd just had to get somebody else".

- Hank in March 1978, while introducing Alan Jones: "during next number, Alan is going to show us his virtuosity. And then he is going to play a bass guitar solo".

- Hank in March 1978, introducing "Nivram", asks an audience member: "it's eh, was recorded, do remember when it was recorded?", Audience member: "1959", Hank: "wrong, you lose, take your clothes off!" (laughs). "Actually it was '61, 1861".

- Bruce in June 1975, before introducing "Little 'B'": "Et maintenant... et maintenant" (rhythm of "Et Maintenant" played briefly by Bruce and Alan Tarney).

Do any other quotes come to mind?

Hank: as reaction to applause from the audience - " Don't... don't... don't stop!"

Bruce (looking at Hank's suit): I have a pair of curtains like that
Hank: You used to have a pair of curtains like that!

I think you'll find it was the 25 years concert shown on TV at the time.

Bruce said Cliff looks like a feather duster

Always liked the way they performed 'Time Is Tight' looking like they were impersonating wooden figures on a large town clock

Not The Shadows, but Hank Marvin during his 1995 solo tour (as seen on the Hank Plays Live video), when Hank presents his band, he says : "make no mistake, they are the best... in their price range !".

At the Brighton concert I attended during the 2004 "Final Tour", when introducing "Let me be the one", Hank said : "we were told, don't win, either we'll have to set up the Eurovision contest next year, so we finished second" !
I guess he told the same at other venues...
