I don't know about kids playing stuff like Smoke on the Water or Stairway to Heaven in music shops these days...
As far as I am aware, the kids trying guitars in music shops these days usually seem to thrash away at "power chords" often with an open tuned or detuned guitar on heavy distortion, or they widdle away with their fuzzy noise playing 1,000 notes per minute at 1,000mph-indeed that is the sort of stuff that even the younger chaps working in the music shops seem to play these days, but can many (or any ) of them actually play a tune, or even a melody? Even a pleasant sequence of chords?
Over the years, I've been knocked out by hearing chaps in music shops playing Chet Atkins style pieces, classical guitar pieces and jazz chordal solo arrangements, or country picking on guitar or banjo.....but not for many years have I heard such stuff...!!
Ecca, perhaps you should try playing a Shads tune next time you are in a shop, some of the young ones may actually find it interesting and become inspired to play some real music!
