Jet Black - which guitar?

Postby abstamaria » Wed Oct 17, 2012 11:35 pm

"Jet Black" was recorded in 1959, when the Shadows were still the Drifters. It actually became popular here in Manila, so far away.

Did Hank already have Cliff's Stratocaster then? If not, what guitar did he use?

Antoria (Guyatone) LG50 - apparently Hank was tapping it's rather microphonic pickups in the gaps in the bass intro!

The live version (from Cliff's first album) was recorded in february 1959, Hank was then playing the Antoria, as pics from the recording session confirm.
According to some sources, the first Strat arrived in march 1959, according to others, it was in july 1959. I rather think it was july, so it's likely it was the Antoria which was used for the studio version recorded in may 1959.
The studio version was released on a single in UK, with Driftin', and added to the "Apache" EP in France.

Steve Turner's biography of Cliff states that the Strat was ordered in April 1959.

If it was ordered in april, it wasn't certainly already there in may...

The exact date for the recording session at Abbey Road of both "Jet Black" and "Driftin'" is May 25th, 1959, if I'm not mistaken.

Antoria (Guyatone) LG50

Thanks very much, all. I couldn't get that clicking sound by tapping on a Stratocaster's pick-up, so that and the date argue in favor of an Antoria (Guyatone) LG50.

For those (including myself) not too familiar with the model, here's what it looks like.

The booklet cover photo of the new Rollercoaster 2CD BBC Radio Saturday Club compilation shows Hank playing his Antoria/Guyatone, as does the initial LP release.
