Theme for Young Lovers

Postby robert kollar » 26 Jul 2013, 23:03

I know that this has most likely been addresses before but being new to the group I have never heard the answer. Some CD have a double note at the beginning that was not on the song when I first heard it in the 60s. ANy explanation as to how and why that extra note got there. I really don''t like it. I believe it's a mastering error, if you listen to the original analogue version it's a single note, i think the fault occured when it was being transferred to digital, i could be wrong but thats what happened.

I have the double note on 50 Golden Greats. The company shouldn't have put out faulty goods!

Jim Nugent (should he wish to!) can give everyone 'Chapter & Verse' on the mis - mastered double note start on "T F Y L". It's NOT on the new Early Years set btw.

I believe it was an error, but it's such a good one that it almost sounds as though it could be deliberate.

The extra note is placed exactly a sixteenth note's (semiquaver's) distance before the correct first note, putting it precisely where it would be if it were a genuine pick-up note (given the dotted quaver + semiquaver rhythm pattern of the tune).

Ah..but Jim....which reissued CDs actually have the version with the mis - mastered 'double note'? Fans can then avoid those if they have a real aversion to said incorrect sixteenth note intro.

The track appears nine times on CD in my collection:

Double note (incorrect):

(a) the original "The Early Years" box set CDx6
(b) "A Portrait of The Shadows" CD (Castle Communications, Germany)
(c) "Dance On!" CD (Laserlight, Germany)
(d) "30 All-Time greatest Hits" CD (EMI, Australia)

Single note (correct):

(a) "The Original Chart Hits 1960-1980" CDx2
(b) "Wonderful Life / Aladdin And His Wonderful Lamp" CDx2
(c) "More Hits" CD (original 1989 EMI version - stereo only)
(d) "More Hits!" CD (later mono & stereo version - both tracks correct)

Hope that helps...

Thanks Jim. Yes....it was the original issue of "The Early Years" box set....that's when the error first appeared. It has been corrected for the new (expanded) version of "The Early Years" 'box'.

Bests....Rob :D

I remember reading this a long while ago and, to settle a friendly argument here, had to search for the thread. I sometimes don’t out of habit, but should really always.play the tune with a single note.

“Semi-quavers” - I have to look that up.

The old threads are so much more about the Shadows. And more interesting!

Thank you to all who contributed then. I am retreading many.
