That Piccolo Trumpet was a Cor Anglais, and I back Ian on this. The same solo in Nick's version would have been completely out of place.

It is well established that the lead instrument for the instrumental passage on The Beatles' recording of
Penny Lane was a piccolo trumpet (sometimes known as a Bach trumpet).
The soloist was one Dave Mason (1926 - 2011).

Thanks Jim, I remember seeing George Martin say that when Paul McCartney told him what he wanted he replied that it sounded like Paul wanted a Cor Anglais. Perhaps I should have remembered what followed on from there.

Unfortunately my piccolo trumpet skills are very subpar! I decided not to copy the original solo note for note and instead opted for an improvised solo (on guitar).
