It is well established that the lead instrument for the instrumental passage on The Beatles' recording of Penny Lane was a piccolo trumpet (sometimes known as a Bach trumpet).

The soloist was one Dave Mason (1926 - 2011).

Thanks Jim, I remember seeing George Martin say that when Paul McCartney told him what he wanted he replied that it sounded like Paul wanted a Cor Anglais. Perhaps I should have remembered what followed on from there.

Unfortunately my piccolo trumpet skills are very subpar! I decided not to copy the original solo note for note and instead opted for an improvised solo (on guitar).
