It doesn't work for me either Bob, it's not you - it's the lack of melody, there isn't one.
Cliff's hit 'Move it' is the same sort of tune when it comes to converting to an instrumental. Each are great rock & roll songs in their intended form, but will never work as instrumentals because they are essentially vocal performances. ;)

Dunno Dave, I think it does have a melody, short and to the point which suits guitar instrus, otherwise it's difficult to define what would suit an instru.

It seems to have been overall very well received though. I would say though there's a few things I would probably change if I were to do it again.
This version is drenched heavily in reverb which is really what was happening here to the instrus down under in the mid-60's - surf, sand, stomp dancing at the local surf club. Heavy twanging of the tremolo bars etc but I should have pulled the melody out more with less drive in it.

Well I sort of agree with Dave; the majority of pop songs don't have sufficiently strong melodic content to make good instrumentals.

But I agree with Bob with regard to this particular one. Someday I might post my old version, so that you can see how good his is!

I’ve listened a few times Bob, I think you may well be right about pulling the melody out a bit, the vocals were very dominant and tight on this?

Steve, it would certainly be good to hear your version!

Who knows Steve, I think we all tend to be our own worst critics!

Here's a twist. Friend of mine, Phillip, took a liking to the instrumental and wanted to do it as a vocal. We recorded his voice yesterday using the backing from my original less the melody part. Fair to say he doesn't quite get the notes pitched well at times but a bit of fun anyway. https://app.box.com/s/oslve14oqzxhdo9tp0l3z7qv9rapwn8g
