APACHE_THE JOURNEY_narrated by Paul

Hi Everyone

Last week Paul collated an interesting selection of The Shadows recordings of Apache over the years to show how Hank's technique and Their sound has changed.

Hope you find this interesting while Video 3 is being prepared.

Most interesting, Spike.

In recent years, a friend and I discovered, by accident, that picking over the middle pickup without tremolo produced a sound nearer to the original as per your posting.

Following on from my experiments with the Super Champ and TVS3 I recorded 'Apache' with the resultant sound file below. Still difficult to get the intro to sound right though!

Kind regards,

Terry

Hi Terry and Stuart

Thanks for your comments

Terry: That was a great version of Apache.

At one stage I was beginning to think you posted the original by mistake :D

Also nice playing and interpretation of Hank's phrasing. That Fender Super Champ sounds great too.

Well done mate and its good to see you putting your TVS3 to good use 8-)

Cheers

Great stuff guys, I enjoyed listening to the comparisons being made.
One thing I would point out that I have found, is that the tremolo responds far less with heavier string gauges and needs more energy (13/56) than with lighter strings (11/50).
This maybe the reason that it sounds like Hank appears to have used it less in the early days, but if you look at the video footage from that period, he does use it quite a bit.

Hi Dave

I havent seen any early 1960's videos where Hank used the trem a lot. for Apache. He does on other tunes but I havent seen footage where he uses it like his does on others.
I have one here from 1964 where he hardly uses it for Apache and I would say the strings wouldnt be as heavy as back in 1960.
