Here's an old instrumental by the Dakotas - I think that it was the flip side of "The Cruel Sea".
I didn't find their sound easy to capture but hopefully this soundfile has some feel of the original.

One of my favourite instros of all time, with a very distinctive guitar sound.

Hi Roger, Ah, glad that you decided to post this one; a real gem of a number, and a great sound from you.
I think i'll mention this one to the guys in 'Danish-Shads' the new band that i'm very proud to be a part of!

Very Best Wishes', Richard.

As you said George the original has a very distinctive guitar sound and I've not seen much published on how Mike Mansfield actually achieved it. On some of their recordings it sounds very much as though there was a piano doubling the lead but I don't hear it with this track.
On most photos of the group that I've seen taken during the early 60s he is shown mostly with a Guild guitar with twin humbuckers so I used something similar. However, I'm sure that there were studio techniques that influenced the final result as well.
Hi Richard - glad to hear that you liked this one.

Hi Roger,

I've always thought that they got their unique sound by doubling the guitar with a piano, but I've never seen anything to substantiate the fact.

Well played, anyway.

Pat.

Fabulous sound. Where did you get the fabulous BT.

My pal Al Young (Stratstroker) managed somehow to get very close to their sound a few years ago when he did a version of The Cruel Sea using his Fender 2001 American series Stratocaster into a Peavey Studio Pro 50 watt amp and a zoom RFX 2000 and a Korg ampworks.
