I think you've got "that sound" down just fine. Is just a matter of working on the phrasing.
You have the luxury of watching the vids to see where Jet plays the notes. That has a lot to do with the sound too.
You're doing fine and I look forward to your next recording. :)
11 gauge strings are quite tuff to deal with and are best for rhythm playing UNLESS you've developed strong fingers from playing the bass.
You might want to try your hand at bass as well. You might fall in love, like I did.

Are there any local musicians you can find to back you?

Thanks very much for listening and for your words of encouragement. I'm working now on re-learning a couple of phrases that differ from the original and will hopefully have it ready to try out at our next Club meeting.

I'm really pleased you like the sound. A lot of that I think has to do with the heavier bass strings (10-52) which have improved both my Strats. I'll never go back to the lighter bass strings and am almost considering setting up with 11s but as I'm just starting to learn how to bend strings better might leave that for awhile.

Best wishes and thanks again
Rosemary

Hi Rosemary. You could try 11's on one of your Strats and see how they go over a space of time. You might find you like them.
I was using them on my Squier Strat and 10's on my Ibanez. I found the 11's much warmer and thicker in sound and not too hard to play either.

Hi Walt and Hugh
Thanks. Jet played it faster than my backing track which was actually a pleasant surprise when I got the backing track. Before then I was trying to play along with Jet and it was also a bit more difficult as it was a live band. When the backing track arrived I realised I was closer to being able to play it than I thought but trusted my memory too much. Hence the wrong (well different notes - I was in the right key at least :))

I might wait another year before moving on to 11s but think I could cope with them as I also play the acoustic a lot with thicker strings and have now also tried a guitar with 11s and didn't find them much different (though wasn't bending them).

We now have a local Shadows 'Club' http://www.brisbaneshadowsplayers.com/ and had our first meeting 2 weeks ago. Already I've picked up some great playing tips and am very much looking forward to the next meeting. At present we're only a small group but perhaps we will even have some backing musicians at some stage as we develop and attract more players. It would be really great to play along with a band though I don't think I'm quite ready for that yet :)

Best wishes

Hi Lynn
Thanks very much and I'm glad you liked it. I've re-learnt the phrase I'd played from memory and got a bit wrong and will hopefully now be able to play it at our next Shadows Club meeting. I'm sure to make mistakes but would like to give it a try and also hear how it sounds on different equipment. :)
Best wishes

Hi Rosemary ,, I gather you are just learning , or have not been playing very long , but from what i see and hear , your doing just fine ,,
Very nice tone from your strat ,, just slow down and take each step as it comes , theres no hurry.
There were a few timing issues in the track but dont let that put you off doing what you enjoy .
Some good advice has been posted in this thread ,, listen to whats being said , and practice , practice , practice ..

I personally thought this was a very good rendition of this tune ,
Well done Rosemary .
Keep up the good work .

Kindest Regards
Dave

I think you would do fine playing with other players in a band. Its always a wee bit iffy at first but it soon comes together. It creates an awareness of the players around you that you will never ever get playing with a backing track. You gain a kind of extra sense of each of you knowing what the other is doing or going to do. Which is not only a great feeling but great experience for you. As the great Joe Pass once said, you can play all you like at home along with recordings and the like, but there is no greater learning experience than to play on a stage to an audience along with other players. Thats when you really learn to become a musician.
Wise words 8-)
Hugh.

Hi Dave and Hugh
Thanks for listening, Dave and for your encouragement. :)
I started learning guitar (acoustic) in March 2010 and then bought a Strat a couple of months later (and a backup Strat! a few months after that) so I've been playing almost 2 years now. Sometimes I get a bit depressed about my progress e.g. not being able to play the beginning of 'Apache' or the gallop properly despite practising it for so long but then I can play other tunes a lot better and am getting better at double stops and string bending etc.. Now we have our own local Shadows Club I'm sure I'll make faster progress too and have already picked up some very useful hints.

Hugh: Maybe one day we'll have the opportunity to play with a band at one of our meetings. It would be a great experience. In the meantime I've been thinking of buying some different backing tracks for variety and sometimes play along to YouTube clips to get used to other arrangements.

Best wishes

Thanks Keith
I'll look into buying some new ones soon and I have to buy another one I've just learnt too as it's at the stage where I could probably play it to backing now.
Best wishes
