Memories Are Made of This (from 1965)

Postby donna plasky » 18 Apr 2012, 18:28

Just happened to come across this on YouTube. All five of them are singing (Cliff, Hank, Bruce, Brian, John R) and they are not playing any instruments. The orchestra in back of them is playing. It is probably silly of me to post this video, but I really liked it. It's different.

Best wishes,
Donna

That was Jimmy Tarbuck walking backwards off the stage at the beginning of the clip, and in 1965, he was compére of the "Sunday Night At The London Palladium" TV show, on which Cliff and The Shadows appeared probably at least twice a year each.

When they appeared together, it was customary for the Shads to do a short spot (maybe one number, maybe two) before Cliff came on. I recall a 1965 SNATLP show where The Shadows (dressed as in that clip) sang - no instruments - a version of The Crystals' Da Doo Ron Ron, much to the disappointment of the 14-yr-old JN watching in Liverpool. I wonder whether that was the same show? Perhaps the group's equipment van was stranded on the M1 or something...

Hi, Jim. I see your point about the disappointment (despite the big smile it put on my face to see all five of them in tuxedos, singing :D ). I guess if I was watching TV, especially as a teenager, and they said "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones" -- and here comes Mick, Keith, and Ron, with no guitars... :?

I've seen John R sing with Hank/Bruce a few times, but I've never seen Brian singing.

I did a quick search on YouTube and I found the tune you mentioned, but it is probably not the same performance. The video and the audio don't match, but it doesn't sound like an orchestra. Never heard them play this tune before; I like it.

Kind regards,
Donna

This is one for the detectives!

The video is a cut-together of old footage with Jet and Tony set to a soundtrack which to my ears sounds more like the Bennett-Rostill line-up.

Indeed, the Crystals had their hit with this in 1963, which provides some support for the theory.

Jim, I am sure you have heard this a million times by now, but if it would be OK to have it said one more time...

Liverpool... 8-) Cool!

I recently stopped by a music store in New Jersey while in the area -- it's a store where a lot of guitars are set out on guitar stands and they want you to pick them up and play them. Here is a photo I took with my mobile phone, while walking through the bass guitar section. This Hofner bass is practically a tourist attraction...everybody who sees it either photographs it, as I did. Or some [right handed] people have apparently picked it up and played it a bit. :D

Kind regards,
Donna

Ecca, that is absolutely beautiful. Your name would look lovely on the headstock, with a big fancy, curly "E" in Ecca. Serial number 000001. Don't let anyone spray paint it white!

Congratulations, Ecca.

Best wishes,
Donna
