Hi Geoff,

I did understand that you had a health problem, but I was not aware that it curtailed your playing; I am very sorry to hear that. Let's hope we can all give you lots to be interested in on this multi-menu'd community site. We all enjoy your contributions and comments here and I wish you, as I think all other members on this forum would, all the very best.

Regards to Sue and Mark.

Hi John,
I hadn't heard you play Cavatina before and I was very impressed by the ease you play it -
I agree with the other comments that it didn't need a volume pedal.
It was a recording technicians dream as you know the song so well you can play it faultlessly in one take.

A brilliant rendition - cheers Phil

Just love this tune , very smooth playing with a tone to suit.

I was so proud to lead my daughter up the aisle while a recording of me rang out as we walked ,, the proudest moment of my life .
I was so glad she picked it , its a great guitar players tune that requires feeling and emotion .
Excellent playing , loved it .

Regards
Dave

Thanks Phil and Dave.

The recording was easier than expected because Phil is so easy to work with and takes off any pressure when you get the 'take one' nod from him. It is a beautiful number and the timing is all important. In a sound check we switched from bridge pick-up to the middle one - much smoother and mellow for this number.

Dave - an excellent choice for a wedding, which must have set the tone for the rest of the day. Sounds like you did the original recording for the number played at your daughter's wedding - I'll bet you were well chuffed. Why not let us hear it?

Another number we get called to do at wedding receptions is 'Dirty Dancing'; its not that difficult so worth looking at as a good candidate for an instrumental version... food for thought.

Thanks again.

Great version John 8-) Love the way you use the bends in this piece. I use the bridge pickup for this tune but I'll need to try the middle like you do, it really warms up the sound somewhat.
What gauge of strings are you using, you seem to be able to bend these lower strings with ease?

An unusual gauge really - 9.5 to 44 (D'Adario) !! 10s would be ideal really, but I do a lot of chord work and they're easier on my fingers.

I find these best for live gigs as I can cover all manner of stuff that we do from Chuck Berry to the Keiser Chiefs.

Thanks for your comments.

Hi Dave, nice performance with great sound also. As a live performance this came over very well and the sound you get live is great. Excellent.

Paul, you'll need an extra two strings on your bass! Sorry, only kidding... hopefully you will be able to learn it quickly by watching the finger work on the video.

Hi John
How about adding 8 strings? I recently bought a Burns Double 6, and while messing about with it I found myself playing Cavatina. To me it sounds OK, but has anyone else ever done it on a 12 string?

Hi Paul, sorry for delay in replying - just getting over wretched bug that took hold!

The Burns Double 6 is a great sounding guitar, but I don't think it makes the best instrument for instrumentals. As a foundation to a number it can sound very spacious and ads another dynamic to the rhythm section. And, I've never heard a version of Cavatina played on a 12 string.

However, for playing at home in your own music room it would certainly give you lots of fun trying out different numbers to see how they would sound. It may even throw up a few surprises. Maybe you've found one?

Cheers,
John
