Peace Pipe Live on G&L S500 Strat

Postby roger bayliss » 03 Sep 2014, 00:49

Hi all

Thought we needed to get a demo up of the sound of my G&L S500 Strat (Tribute Series). This was played by our own John Clayton (normally a bass player with a Shads Tribute Act) who agreed to let me film him playing. The echos are not EFTP or exotic Tape machines just two pedals put together and timed to get the echo sound and the amp is a solid state Orange amp (No Valves here) built by our own Roger Busby. A graphic EQ pedal has been used to further enhance the live sound.

The video and sound is off a Samsung Galaxy Mobile phone.

Hope it gives you an insight into this guitar for Shadows application.

Thanks Roger that's a lovely sound, a sweetness to it. Looking forward to next week now.
Just had a look at my tracking for the Fiorano and it's at Rotherham on the van for delivery. :P
Rotherham is only six miles from where I'm sitting and I'm very tempted to get in the car and . . .
They probably wouldn't give it to me anyway - soon be morning. 8-)

Out of curiosity I played Peace Pipe on my new G&L last night and although slightly different in tone, the guitar handled it exquisitely. It annoys me that because of the demos on you tube by various music shops and companies, the Fiorano is pigeon holed as a shredding axe. Shure it can do that, but I have had some Jazz tones , Country, Rock . . . everything a guitarist could ever need, including our own genre. :)

Nice sound and playing- caught the bit at the end well!!
Do you think that Leo's GL guitar is an improvement on the original Strat?

Yes I think it is an improvement as Leo Fender re visited his Strat and had listened to the views of players and implemented features that make it much better IMHO. I had an email off a guy from our club who played one the other night and he is off to buy one. He simply said it was easier to play and he could get the sounds much easier on the S500. So another converted to my way of thinking. Best bet is to try one out if you can. All the popular Shads tunes sounded great at our club on Tuesday Night whoever played the S500.

Dave Robbo... I reckon Peace Pipe would sound good on that guitar with the right know how .. :)

Hi dAve, I emphasise your post there, I recently purchased a prs custom 24 and all the review I saw were distortion etc, there are very few that do a clean sound, the prs can do a shadows sound almost as well as a strat with the right settings, it's very easy to write things off etc online reviews

I love PRS guitars Steve, I used to have one but sold it over ten years ago because it didn't fit in with what was expected. I was looking at getting another when Roger reminded me about G&L. I will very likely get a PRS at some point again. you're right, you can get a great Shadows sound from a PRS if you set the thing up that way, but these days it's as if a guitar isn't any good unless you can get distortion out of it according to the people that make the demos.
I was using distortion as far back as 1964 with my Strat through a Gibson fuzz box trying to make sense of it all before Jeff Beck blew me away with his 'Heart Full Of Soul" and 'Shapes Of Things" in the Yarbbirds. My second machine which did it perfectly was a Zonk Machine which did it perfectly combined with the Vox Wah Wah, you could activate the Wah Wah and hit a sweet spot and the guitar would sustain for ever. These days I have revisited the same tone using initially the Vox Tone Lab and only last week, the Zoom G3X. :)

PS Has anyone noticed that even when the guys doing the demos show you what they call a clean sound, it's still distorted to hell ? :?
