The Skye Boat Song (Video)

Postby Phil McGarrick » 27 Feb 2015, 18:13

"The Skye Boat Song" is a Scottish folk song, which can be played as a waltz, recalling the escape of Bonnie Prince Charlie from Uist to the Isle of Skye after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

The song tells how Bonnie Prince Charlie, disguised as a serving maid, escaped in a small boat after the defeat of his Jacobite rising of 1745, with the aid of Flora MacDonald.

My Instrumental version is based on the album track from The Shadows “Simply Shadows” album - my 6th cover from this 1987 album to date.

The Backing track came from Shadows workout 10 which can be bought here:-

I have included rough hand written Tabs that I wrote at the end of the video.
And this is the way I have played it.
Or you can buy the score and Tabs from Tabman here..
http://www.tabman.co.uk/Ian-McCutcheons ... t-10-Tabs/
(I haven’t seen these so may be different fret/string positions to the way I play it.)

Played on my Alan Brason Strat with Kinman FV-HMS pickups , Alesis Q2 with EFTP patch 0-36 and recorded in Cubase SX5.

Video made with 3x Sony SR12 camcorders and a Smartphone for the Dunlop DV1 foot pedal and edited in Sony Vegas pro 9.

Many thanks for watching..

Thanks very much Fred and Ian for your nice comments always appreciated.

This one sits nicely between "I want to know what love is" and "Chain reaction" on the same album so I kept hearing it when learning the other 2 Lol.

Have a great week.. Cheers Phil

Thank you very much Lynn - The Shadows make great and sometimes unusual arrangements of songs
and I liked their take on this one. Very glad you liked it.
Cheers Phil
