Buganvilla, Different arrangement

Postby JohanDeGreyze » 30 May 2015, 17:38

Hi,

I am new to this site. Almost a year ago I posted Buganvilla on my YT channel. Not the original version, but an arrangement of my own. A lot happened in that year, for instance I discovered the existence of VSTHost. A free software program that comes with more than 125 Shadows patches and also some Spotnicks. I have seen some publications here from Gege and Christian Boileau (its developer) about it. I decided to make a re-mix with a VSTHost patch called Pete Korving sound. You can hear the result here:

Buganvilla re-mix

This can be found on my YT channel and was posted about 10 month ago:
On You Tube several songs with this title can be found, composed by different people. I arranged the composition of Dave Robinson. Dave plays his version on the CD "Into the Spotlight" that was produced by Warren Bennett in 2005.
Everything done by myself except for the bass which was made up and played by my brother Herman.
I hope you like it.

Buganvilla on You Tube

he instruments/VSTs used are:
- Breedlove 12 string (Korean)
- Burns Apache (mid pos.) for lead and background lead, recorded via Alesis Quadraverb GT (pr 00, Binson Classic 1)
- Herman plays Ybanez bass
- Amplifier- and effects emulations for lead and bass guitar with Guitar Rig 4 and DAW (Reverbs, tube sound and EQ)
- True Piano's sound (Amber Grand Piano) from DAW
- Roland Cakewalk Session Drummer 3 (acoustic) (DAW)
- Roland Cakewalk String Session x64 (Symphony) (DAW)
- DAW: Cakewalk X2 Producer
- Mastering: Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio v10
- Video: Recording: Panasonic DMC-LX7 Lumix; Editing: Power Director 12 Ultimate

Cheers

Hi Johan, thank you for attempting Buganvilla and posting here, it's very flattering and humbling to see people play one of your own compositions.
You made a good job of it and I would invite you to do it again if you would be so kind in the arrangement that I originally wrote it. If I could, I would dis-own that version, but sadly I took part and it sticks.

For various reasons I never liked the way the tune was re-arranged for arranging's sake for that project as it was never a true representation of what it was, so I recently re-recorded it and you can hear it here. Incidentally, different arrangements are one thing but wrong notes are inexcusable, check out your middle eight.

Please feel free to do it again and if you do I'll look forward to hearing it. :)

Hi Dave,

Unfortunately I have very few time at this moment as it is a time consuming job to do another arrangement with all instruments of oneself. The reason I made my version is that I did not like the marching tempo of the original and was not fond of the English or French horns. Besides I had the idea it was not finished completely.
The original is in my opinion a good recording, but not everybody has the same taste. So that is why probably the original was arranged how it is arranged. For you a reason to re-create it the way it should be to your opinion.
I listened to both let's name it the Warren Bennett arrangement and the Dave Robinson arrangement and I like both but yet they are completely different. You have some other feelings to it as the composer and I can understand that. But it happens that other people have different looks. You see that all the time also with all kinds of Shadows numbers like i.e. Sleepwalk, The Breeze and I to mention only a few.

Hi Jan/Dave, A good melody lends itself to any arrangement and this is no exception, I havent heard a bad version of Buganvilla and Dave..you should be proud ! If I wrote this Id have it up on itunes, The other side of the coin is that I have scratchtakes of stuff Ive written and I wouldnt like anyone doing a mickey mouse job on them.. but this is good. regards gary

Thanks Gary,

One can discuss about taste, but as that is really personal there will always be differences of mind.

Hi,

I think I have to explain the about of this arrangement.
First of all I was not aware of the relation with a ships name. Well that would not have changed my idea on how to set it up, but I certainly would have mentioned that in my introduction text. I also did not know that the composition was from 1999. I bought the CD "Into the Spotlight, vol I" which was dated 2005 last year or the ear before from Leo's Den and that contained both the full version and the BT. As I could not find any other date I assumed that was the date.

A lot of you will know that the Buganvilla is also a plant with beautiful flowers growing o.a. in France and Belgium. When you have looked at my You Tube version, you will see that I used lot's of pictures of this beautiful flower in the video.

Compositions can mean something special to a composer, I realize that. A different arrangement of a composition always gives the composer extra credits as his name is mentioned. When a composition is performed badly the composer will never be blamed, more the other way around.

What were the intensions of Ernesto Lecuona when he composed "La Comparsa" or "The Breeze and I" some 100 years ago. What would he have thought when he could hear the version of Jan de Hont (The Maskers) or the Shadows, or Catharina Valente. Jerry Lordan, did he blame Jorgen Ingmann when he had a hit with Apache in the US as he wrote it for The Shadows, the one most of us like much better....

Hope this helps

Hi Jan
I have listened to a few versions of "Buganvilla" and feel that personally your arrangement of it is outstanding
I very much liked the style tone and tempo in the way you and your brother have played and put it together.
From listening to and reading up about your playing and creativity in making quality recordings this does not
surprise me as your a man with a lot of skill and talent who strives to make outstanding recordings and this
one is just that. You should be well chuffed Jan because you deserve to be for all your effort in making and
putting it together and posting.
Pete

PS I liked both versions but the re-mix just edged it for me

Hi Pete,

Thank you for the very promotional text. With composition you mean of course arrangement as the song is composed by Dave Robinson.
Thanks for listening Pete and the compliments and nice to see you here as well.

Cheers

Hi Jan
