I thought it was actually written by Delia Derbyshire rather than Ron Grainer who took the credit for it, bring her boss at the time?

Definitely not DD. Composed by RG and performed by DD as a member of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. I don't think RG was ever the boss of that!

Thanks to JimN I heard the Radiophonic Workshop play live in summer 2014. Memorable!

Yeah Grainer wrote it but it was DDs incredible arrangement and her mastery of technology that made the piece what it is. Much like John Barry's treatment of Monty Norman's Bond Theme. The original ideas are barely recognizable.
