Originally recorded by the Ventures as "Spudnik". Later re-titled as "Surf Rider". You may recognise it from the soundtrack of "Pulp Fiction".

Only reason I watched that, in my opine, lousy movie was to hear that toon.
Came at the end. I should have just played the record and spared myself the movie.
I guess it "helped" the Ventures a little bit, but not enough here in the USA. They remain firmly entrenched in Japan and are pop icons over there.

Of course the version used on the soundtrack was not the Ventures, but that of the Lively Ones with the extra saxaphone break. Don't suppose anyone knows where we might find a good BT for that version!

The notes on the SFM CD "Mashed Potatoes & Gravy" and in Malcolm Campbell's excellent Ventures' discography credit this as a Nokie composition.

Interestingly (or perhaps not!) the notes which came with the Japanese backing track CD credit it to Bob Bogle, Nole (sic) Edwards and Don Wilson. The Wikipedia entry for Pulp Fiction soundtrack repeats this credit (including "Nole"). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulp_Fiction_(soundtrack))

I sort of guessed that Jim . Still find it strange to see him referred to as Nole when he is known professionally as Nokie

Maybe is a legal thing because on the original early Dolton LP (with the blue labels) his sole compositions were always listed as Nole Edwards. Collaborative efforts were Wilson, Bogle, Edwards, Taylor.

You can see many intresting things on this pic of the Surfing LP label. The Ventures publishing company was Dobo Publishing (DonBob).
