Sounds good to me, it has that ethereal sound but not the overpowering halo you here on live Meazzi recordings. Another thing which makes it more like the recordings, is the flatness of the repeats (if you understand what I mean). To get a Meazzi to sound right in a live situation, the echo level seems to be set quite high so that the damped note effect governs the overall level and this can cause a metalic sound to be generated when playing clean notes. Anyway, I digress, a good sound file.

Thanks for those comments folks, we have - and are recording several tracks, using different options of amplifier and echo box, in order to demonstrate that you do not necessarily need to spend a fortune to achieve the sound. That said, the easiest method without doubt was by using the TVS3 - possibly because there is minimal 'knob twiddling' required, as the echo programmes are pre-set.

Amongst the echo machines that we have here to compare are the Binson Echorec, ESE Echomatic, Q20, Quad GT, Magicstomp, ZoomG7 1ut, Zoom RFX2200 nd Watkins Copicat IC400. The amplifiers are the Australian built (Rod Jenks) AC30/4, Vox AC15 Heritage and the very modestly priced Vox AVT30.

Daniel and I are keen to try and demonstrate that the sound can be achieved with budget equipment and we are currently working on perfecting microphone position, choice of microphone and EQ applied to the guitar track in the final mix, as well as the amount and type of reverb that enhances those early recordings. I'm encouraged by the results so far, but need to perfect it so that others have clear guidelines in order to benefit.
Also I would add that opinions and comments from others are invaluable and thus far, though we have had really good results, input from David Martin (who kindly supplied the Binson) and Tony Parnham (who kindly supplied his TVS3) have resulted in improvements to the project that I didn't imagine possible, which goes to show, four heads are better than one . . . . . I have another version of 'The Savage' that I played with the same desk settings, but using a Quad GT and Vox AVT30 amplifier, which I will post on new thread.

For those interested, 'Apache' is coming shortly, but we have listened hard and long, only to discover that this really was a 'one off' and has a magic tone in certain parts of the tune, that none of the other Shadows hits seemed to have. We will do our best to find out why and pass on any info as and when, but I promise not to mention the Gretsch . . . . .

Just to add what Dave says. I have only had the TVS3 for about two weeks only using it in my small room at home with 'er indoors monitoring it's volume when Corrie is on. So the opportunity to hear comparisons with different amps and other units in Dave's studio and in context led to an informative and enjoyable afternoon. Not because I own the machine but it did overshadow the other echo boxes for me.
I've now found the beauty of the machine is that you have total control of the effects, in that driving it hard you can increase the dirt on the Meazzi emulation or have it off, increase the echo level and it's duration quite easily. For example if like Jim you thought the the echo sounded a bit lifeless and flat you just tweak to your own personal taste and swim in it if thats what you like, but no matter what, the direct sound just seems right even through a smaller Vox.
Yes it was expensive but I did'nt begrudge the cost of the TVS3 it was Mr Brown's extortionate vat and taxes. The price has been the No1 question to me so if anyone is interested in purchasing a TVS3 and would like to know what I paid just 'pm' me and you can have the amount of duty I paid. The price of the TVS3 is on the site and you just calculate the foreign exchange rate at the time which is paid in two parts...deposit then the rest on shipping.
I shall be taking it to North Nott's Club on Sunday (18th April) for all to play through if required.

Hi Dave

Daniel plays superb and the sound is very very good indeed to my memory of the original recording. Just wondered if maybe a good dash of top end presence around 8kHz might brighten it up, boosted around 9 - 10 db as a thought... How much EQ did you need to use with the TVS as well to mod the original sound to the recorded sound ? Might be a bit more room reverb in the original ? Like to hear against a UBH track as well.
