Hey Roger...I hope that theory has been put to rest
I remember Hank joking about it with me around the time the rumours were flying about and he convinced me that it was most certainly a Fender
BTW:
I have a CD with Apache being played on a Gretsch and its not the right kind of sound...to my ears.
