The other end is the mastering of the final mix where levels are concerned. Again here it is best to leave a good ceiling for the mastering process if you intend to master it

I read an article which suggests a good -6Db on the final mix to give the mastering process headroom to bring the recording up to final produced levels and it was a mastering tech who put that statement out.

So that helps with the start levels and end levels to mastering the final. What you do inbetween is a matter for artisitc licence ! How much reverb delay chorus and so on. Less is more as they say !

A good set of monitor speakers are also very important .

Try the demo of this.........

Amazing workflow, very young DAW but many people are switching from Logic and Pro Tools.
Only a thought...sadly not free.....

If messages are to be anonymously deleted because some humourless bugger thinks they're too flippant then that's me buggered.

Well here's me saying I've no time to help etc but finding time to write, but it gives me an opportunity to say that I hope to start in the future some sort of tutorial for the beginers to recording using Camtasia from Techsmith http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia2-1111.html?gclid=CN6E_6-epa4CFVMNfAod8Wy8mw

I bought this for myself a few months ago enabling me to answer specific questions by differing organisations on 'How to----'. Sony gives podcast training vids (WebnAir) to subscribers and purchasers of their products; Acid, Vegas and Sound Forge which are normally about 60 mins long. Robbo's right, you can't beat someone sat with you and Camtasia allows you to walk the pupil through the subject.

The good stuff you see on You Tube is Camtasia derived with the free CamStudio falling short in clarity.

I can't think for a minute why it was removed, it was very funny.
I didn't realise we had a lack of humour around here - this place will end up getting as bad as another guitar orientated site (the one with the with a big agenda) . . . . . . . unless we lighten up a bit . . . . we don't want any of this . . . do we ?

Every USB interface I've tried has been trouble .
I now have a little mixer straight into ( and out of ) the soundcard.
No problems.

On the subject of recording level and trying to drive the input a bit to get a more saturated thing I think limiting is perhaps the only real option and limiting is of course often used to get a good level from the mic.

I would say drive the inputs and use the limiter to clip it down and fix it to the desired input peak level of say -6Db to get around the digital restictions maybe . Anyone got any other thoughts on trying to emulate Malcolm Addeys gain riding type input ?

Limiting does seem to fatten the sound somewhat which is often a desirable thing as well . Just my thoughts.
