Hi Everyone

Thanks for your comments. Its good to know the video has been of some help.

Dave: Regarding amp settings, Paul may respond here or he may discuss that on video part 2... which is happening this Saturday.
Keeping in mind that your ears are what are important and the final set-up will always have to be tuned to suit a
particular venue.
Iain:
At last...a person who remembers Gary from The Herd :D
If you watched our Wonderful Land Video you would have seen that the first slide was of Gary and The Herd.
Nobody picked it :D
Regarding his voice...yep its pretty cool. He does voice overs and does great at interviews.
Its also great for answer phone messages.

Cheers

Hi Spike,

I was just hoping for some starting numbers, which I can then tweak :) . I can control the "venue" aspect at the mixing desk.

Hi Dave

Thanks again for your contribution:

Re a start off point I might wait and see what Paul has to say but most of your questions should be answered in Video 2.

Cheers

Hi Roger,

I think that many of the recordings that were made with 34346 do indicate a low action, with many notes quite "choked" and the sustain rather short (there is of course also speculation as to whether the strings were flat or round wound). We have certainly had better success reproducing those sounds with the action set low, just as you have suggested. I will be commenting along these lines in part 2 of the video.

Also, I suppose I should clarify what I meant by "thin sounding" in relation this guitar. The apparent sound comes from a bright top end (which might have been tamed somewhat by the capacitance of the guitar leads used at the time) rather than the lack of a middle or bottom end that seems to be more the case with some of the cheaper (often ceramic magnet) pickups. When it is tamed the resultant mid range is very nice indeed.

Regards,

paul.

It has always been my view that the cigarette paper wrapped around the A, D, & G stings at the nut (a number of early pics show this clearly) on 34346, were designed to lessen the sustain particularly when playing notes on open strings. I know there is another view, that it was to stop the strings rattling, but I'm not sure that in the short time the guitar was used, the string size/gauge wood have come down as much to cause the trings to rattle, just my opinion.

...interesting indeed......

The only thing which I don't agree is the "playing live part".
IMHO You do not have to use different amps in order to get rid of that bassy sound from the neck PU (when the bridge PU sound is set up well.....)
Just use (as I do) a progammable digital equalizer set up to what ever PU-sound or tune you need.

But as I said before: very interesting Spike ! Say hello to Paul and Gary from me?

BTW, it seems like we're all getting grey, hahahaha....

Cheers

Hi Alan and Pete

Thanks for your contribution boys.

Yes Pete we are all getting older and grayer...just as well we have our music to keep us young at heart :D

I'm still waiting to hear of a possible trip to Perth so that we can have that cold beer together :D

Cheers

I agree with Peter Korving about the live sound and that it shouldn't be a problem to use any of the three pickups on your Strat. I do it week in, week out and these days I only use the Roger Alcock EF86 channel on my VoxTBX.
At one time I had a channel splitter and did switch between the Brilliant channel which was set up for later Shads sounds and the EF86 channel which is used for the early period, but the last few months I have managed with the one channel. Each of my pickups sound exactly how they should as well as the 'in-between' settings.

On looking at this video again, it's refreshing to hear Paul talk about quite a bit of the technical stuff that I have been considering important for years i.e. the microphone placement in front of the amp. As he says, it's a massive tone control and can make the difference to success and failure in getting the sound close. In a live situation I have as close a sound as I really need to get just by using the Strat / ESE Echomatic / Vox amp. There are no secret formulas here, it just works - providing you understand how to set it up and pick the strings.
Quite a few around here have heard and seen us play and have confirmed this to be fact.

I might add that achieving the sound artificially is also no longer a problem, I just use the tools on my Mac in 'Logic Pro' or 'Mainstage', testimony to the use of the Mac as an echo machine is apparent on those last sound files that I posted when everyone was convinced that I had Charlie Hall's new echo machine. All the parameters are there to achieve the 'singing' echo, as well as the amp modelling, though I used the Pinnacle amplifier for those files.

The next task is to record the Gibson J-200 and get it to sound like the one on 'Apache'. I haven't had time to get into this yet, but it's on my next 'to do' list. :)

I don't use any bass and treble, it's not in the EF86 circuit. There's just the 'cut'. I just use my ears.
