On the subject of usb input or line-in input striaght from a guitar I have to agree with Eric.

I have a Behringer Eurorack mixer which provides all the impedance/phantom power etc I will ever need. Line level stuff straight into a PC line-in is OK but it's nice to have control over how the signal is recorded. They're not expensive--if you're paying £1k for a guitar the this little beut is peanuts for the cost.

There's one on eBAY for £40 !! Forget anything else you may need for your hobby, my advise to anyone on this site for a bedroom player is to grab it before it goes. There's buy it now so just buy it !!

As Robbo said earlier, he needed tuition. Well this guy taught me almost all I know over the years. He's a nutty American but he can't help that. You can spend hours meandering through his stuff, just give it a go.

UB802. I have had one for years and I can recommend them. They have been replaced by the tarted up name XENYX802 but it still the same bit of kit. BRAND NEW they are only £45 from CPC or Gear4music so dont get carried away with any bidding!!

Yes Sloxpewk, I sold it you for a really bargain price !

I had the Behringer for a while before I started my abortive search for a decent USB interface.
The minor, irritating problem I had with the Behringer was monitoring the mix while I was recording.
Somehow the ouput fed back to the input and howled until I turned down the right knob.
I always seemed to get it wrong .
I now own a Soundcraft Notepad 102 and there's no problem, it's very clear.
Even if you get a good USB interface you haven't necessarily got a good mixer.
You might as well get a decent mixer in the first place and go straight in.
