TONIGHT_Gary Taylor (quiz posting)

Hi Girls and Boys

This video has the tune played in two sections. One is using a Burns and the other a Fender.
Can anyone tell which guitar was used for which track?

Have fun watching the video http://youtu.be/vtAEw62BvZ4

OK - I think that the first section is the Burns and the second the Fender.

There's not a lot of difference but the first section has a slightly 'rounder' tone which I associate with the Burns Marvin.

Sorry Roger but I've got a feeling that it's the other way round, with the Strat first........Not much in it, really.
Perhaps we can discuss it at the next club meeting on Sunday.
Pat.

Going on the way my own Burns 2004 model sounds I'd say the first track is the Burns, the second track sounds cleaner to me.
That said it could be the other way round because I've done the same thing myself and heard things that have amazed me - but I'll stick to my guns - Burns 1st, Strat 2nd. ;)
Nicely played too. :)

Hi Roger, Pat and Dave

Thanks for taking the time to analyse the two sections.
Its not easy....as the difference is tough to pick...which raises some interesting question about string importance, etc..

I will post the result once everyone has had a chance.

Thanks Again

Hi Spike, I enjoy this sort of stuff, heaven knows I've done similar things in the past and it's fun, it's what the site should be doing more of. It's about information and opinions about how to achieve a goal, helping out people who are not as articulate with gear as others, or trying to save somebody a bob or two when they'e feeling pressured into having to buy the £5000 Strat - or they won't get the sound. Thanks for doing this and I hope you're all OK down under. :)

Hi Dave

All well down under...thanks!

Yeah...I think these kind of posts bring forward some interest.
When I tried to guess which track was which myself and found it very hard, I came up with a thought.

We have the same player using the same gear but all that was different was the two guitars.
I then asked myself if string gauge and string brand is different between the two guitars...shouldnt we be hearing a noticeable difference on strings alone...all else being equal?

If this means string differences are not significant in this comparison then how important are they in THAT SOUND or any other sound? Some people may argue that they are and I'm not disagreeing with that possibility but it makes you wonder....right?

Hello Spike,
Thanks for the post. I always enjoy Gary's playing.
I've listened very carefully with a set of 69 year old 'lug holes' and my pick is Burns followed By Stratocaster.
Cheers,
JB

The thing is with this particular pair of recordings, there are nuances I can hear in each one that have made me choose the way I did, but I have been playing around with my own Burns and Strat guitars in a similar way and those nuances can change just by the way you attack the strings, let alone any tone control tweaking . I don't think that different brands of string are too critical, unless of course one set is a quality brand and the other a cheap and cheerful set. I do look forward to hearing the result - and I'm prepared to be wrong.

I would say definitely Burns first Strat second.

Of course it seems so clear cut it is probably the other way round.

You can allow your ears to tell you what you think you heard. :D :D :D
