Hi Jim,

I haven't heard the original, but, honestly, I don't find this tune truly exciting, besides
the fact that the bass and the bass guitar sound very good and it's very cool to play in the lower register. That's exciting!

I will try to listen to the original sometimes soon.

It’s an atmospheric piece rather than a strong melody. Typical John Barry. The original was sung by Lulu but Brian Bennett did a great instrumental version on his recent Shadowing John Barry album.
Nice to hear it being done here with bass lead...
