Hey Guys... Thanks so much for the positive feedback!!
Nothing special going on here really - I am writing and recording a series of tunes and songs that depict key monents in my life - for an album I want to release. So....the germ of the idea comes from the moment that I want to write about. Just me and my battered up acoustic guitar to form a sole melody that everything else can build from. Then in my little studio I produce the backing arrangement with Pro Tools - I play everything myself, even programming the drums like a drummer would play them (otherwise I find that real 'feel' goes missing - the key is to remember things like a drummer only has two hands so he can't play a hi-hat, snare and tom fill all in the same second - there has to be gaps and different dynamics in the 'hits' on the drums!)... The bass, orchestral stuff, pianos are all samples from different instruments - played in real time again via a midi keyboard... Then comes the guitars. Usually a couple of acoustic tracks panned hard right and hard left, with EQ, compression and reverbs - and a main lead guitar part played right through into PT8 with Amplitube - not an amp in sight, all patches are made by myself with Amp 2 modelling. The same with supporting electric guitar tracks... All of the reverbs and delays are right out of the software and tweaked a little. My guitars are as below on my signature - and I love 'em all.
I guess the key thing about the overall sound is the arrangement, the space for the melody and time spent on the final mixdown and the use of compression, EQ and limiters to give it body and life - its all to easy to strangle the life out of a song with too much but I am learning all the time... I want these songs to have texture and depth. Before I release this though - I will do a proper mastering job on them to really make them sparkle.
What is really gratifying for me with all of your positive comments is that I have only really been recording music like this for around 15 months - before that I was a guitar / amp / tape man who has never recorded solo stuff before at all - let alone on a computer! I would really urge any of you guys looking a breaking into the new world to 'go for it' and write some new songs'!! Trust me - if I can do it, anyone can.
Again - thanks for listening and the time taken to encourage me. It is wonderful.
Regards to all,
Tony.
