Peace Pipe Comparison with eTAP2 vst plugin

Piet's new eTap2HW has created quite a buzz in the forum and it has been interesting and even exciting listening to the debate about how closely it emulates (or does not emulte) Meazzi tape echoes . . . but I would like to remind people that for many years before the appearance of this new echo unit, many, including myself, were using (and still use) Piet's famous eTAP2 vst plugin, which, by the way, is free and which served as the basis for the harware version.

Here is a comparative file, Shadows/eTAP2 that I made based on a recording of Peace Pipe that I did two years ago using my Strat and Korg Ampworks into my PC.

I do not wish to start any debate about which unit is better, because this is only a vst plugin, a softawre program -- but I do hope to show that the eTAP2 does indeed do a good job of emulating Meazzi echoes.

Yes, we did, and it was excellent !! I actually used it more in the beginning because the patches were the same ones. The patches were developed by Piet and his collaborator Jacob Heijer (hence the name J-patches) and were also made available free of charge as an alternative to Charlie's and Geoff Strachan's patches. So, I think credit must also be given to Jacob because his J-patches are the basis for all the Echottaper patches, including those for Zoom, Q20 machines, as well as the PSP608, the eTAP2, and I'm pretty sure the eTAP2HW (Piet, please correct me if I'm wrong). Recently I installed J-patches into a friend's Zoom RFX 2000 and they sounded amazing!!

I think Boing, in reflecting on this that the very first PSP patch was actually done by me and I sent it you and we both put Peace Pipe up here simultaneously.

That is true, and also for Wonderful Land . . . J-Patches did exist for Peace Pipe and Wonderful Land but they needed a slight tweaking and you suggested lowering the gain level on one of the heads (second or third) to get a better tripping echo effect, and I later used the same setting in the eTAP2 vst plugin for both of these songs. The patches for WL and Peace Pipe are actually quite similar. This must have been about six or seven years ago . . .

Well, it seems that not many people are interested in vst plugins nowadays, but please remember that with a laptop and a good (not necessarily expensive) audio interface, the eTap2 vst can be an excellent echo unit in live situations for emulating Meazzi and other echoes. In fact, I think it would do the job almost as well as the eTap2HW . . .

Er... great sound... but Bojan: you could do with a new set of strings on there, mate.

Good suggestion Jim. Too bad I recorded this sound file two years ago, but I can guarantee you that I have changed my strings since then Besides, didn't Hank favor older and less twangy strings?
